I have to do this....
Coheed and Cambria
Yes, they are modern, but they are essentially a concept prog rock band. Everything the band has done, the name included, has been a sweeping concept story, with each album a chapter in the overarching storyline, although with different concepts of how that is approached.
Music style often changes, each album tends to have its own theme.
Second Stage Turbine Blade - light prog, alternative/pop rock
In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth:3 - prog rock, little metal
Good Apollo I'm Burning Star IV, Volume 1 - prog rock
Good Apollo I'm Burning Star IV, Volume 2 - heavier rock, metal, broader range than Vol 2 but less epic in style
By far the two need to listen two would be 'Silent Earth and Good Apollo' Vol 1 (From Fear Through The Eyes of Madness).
The Willing Well tracks are excellent prog. Welcome Home is that hard rock edge, others round out Good Apollo.
For 'Silent Earth, need to listen to: title track (In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth:3), Cuts Marked in the March of Men, the Velorium Camper tracks (esp. Al the Killer), The Light The Glass (ends epicly), and the hidden track (2113).
A lot of influences, notably Rush and Led Zeppelin.
Many of those that hate Rush because of Geddy Lee's vocals hate Coheed and Cambria for the same reason. That, and the lyrics can seem "emo"ish, but its part of the storyline. A lot of death, betrayal, mistrust, murder, etc. It's like a sci-fi space opera.
