I've been slowly building up a nice collection of electronica/down beat/lounge type music. Groups like Stereolab and Zero 7 fit that bill really nicely, but I'm always looking for new artists to check out. So who do you listen to that fits in the electronica lounge type of description.

Oh man, I forgot about Tosca. Definitely. Royksopp kind of trips me out. It's like listening to some sort of weird candy or something.

For down-ish type stuff I've always enjoyed Theivery Corproation and Nightmares on Wax. I'm not sure if that style's what you're after though... I hate trying to navigate genres in electronic music. There's so many it's just retarded.

If you like downtempo you might also check out some of LTJ Bukem's stuff. It's technically D n B, but it's so floaty and atmospheric - it's really easy to listen too; not your typical phrenetic Jungle shiat. The Progression Sessions series features MC's (Conrad), so stay away from those if Vocals aren't your bag. "Journey Inwards" is a really good starting point.

heard of stereo lab long ago (back in high school), liked them, somewhat. Never bought an album though.

But lately....I've been listening to various artist compilation series like:

Kandi series, Beach house series, cafe del mar series, enigma mixes by dj bacon, serve chilled series, and winter chill series.

I have a couple of albums by Theivery Corp that I like, but I've yet to hear anything by Hooverphonic and Massive Attack.

Agreed, its insane how categories there are under electronica. Just off the top of my head:

Drum n Bass
Downbeat
Jungle
Techno
Trance
House
Acid Jazz
Ambient
Dub
Industrial

That's all I can think of offhand but I'm sure I'm missing about 20 or 30 more styles

Lot of good suggestions already.

Nightmares on Wax
Massive Attack
Hooverphonic
Gus Gus
Thievery Corporation
Kruder and Dorfmeister

You might also check out SomaFM. They've got some really good streaming Internet radio channels including one called Beat Blender that plays a lot of downtempo and trip-hop stuff. I'd also recommend their Drone Zone and Groove Salad channels that play atmospheric and ambient stuff. The best part is that they're totally free and there is zero advertising on there. Just load the stream into Winamp or whatever and have at it. I listen to them all the time while I'm working on my computer at home.
