Any experience with tonsil stones?

I know one person posted about it a long time ago...

I guess I have a mild case of them (get them once in a while) and was wondering if there was a cure, besides removing my tonsils?

Anyone else had these?

I believe it's built up plaque that ball up and turn into these little small white plaque balls that stink like hell. They usually get stuck to the tonsils.

I get them once in a while and I just take a little pick and safely remove them from my tonsils. Either that coughing like hell sometimes gets them loose.

I got them all of a sudden and couldn't figure out what they were. Using mouthwash and gargling in the morning will keep them from forming. Also wouldn't hurt to run your finger through your tonsil every once in a while to check.

I am surprised so many people get them. Do you guys not brush? Or maybe it's your diet?

how would brushing help? tiny food particles get stuck in there while you eat... bacteria eat the tiny food particles, poop all over the place and reproduce, causing the tiny particle to get bigger and bigger until it pops out of the hole

gargling w/ mouthwash is the best bet

Yeah, it happens... used to happen to me a lot when I was younger because I have like really recessed tonsils so I have to be more careful. Mouthwash is the way to go. If for some reason it gets gross, I use a q-tip dipped in mouthwash to kinda clean it out.

I always thought I was like the only one. Thats weird...

It would seem to me that not 100% of the buildup is coming from the time you are actually chewing but also from times you are not eating and food stuck in your teeth makes it's way into the cavities.

I seem much more prone to get them when I have a cold of some sort. They define nastiness.

A wet Q-Tip is the best tool to use to dislodge them.

Edit: But since I have post-nasal drip year-round, I can get them at any time. :(

The best advice I heard was to have a waterpic and regularly irrigate back there, that way they never get to noticable size.

The site I saw a long time ago says everybody gets these, but for most people they just dislodge when they are still tiny so they don't notice them. The people that get bigger stones usually have bigger "pockets" in their tonsil tissue.

Ummmm, time for breakfast.

So pretty much just try to use mouthwash and keep it clean... otherwise you need to get your tonsils taken out.

I'm going to visit my nose/throat specialist and see what he recommends I should do.
