Any experience with PC Richard's TV repair service?

Hrmm, I'm getting my DLP set repaired as I can no longer take the noise it makes while running, and was wondering if other people have had positive or negative experiences with PC Richard.

I'd get Samsung to repair it but I'm 2 months out of warranty and now I gotta make use of the extended warranty I bought. :(

Update:
01/06/04
Alright, today the PC Richard technician calls me at 8:25 in the morning. Based on my experiences with Time Warner and Dish Networks, I expected a call the day before in advance but no such luck. The appointment was said to be in a time slot of 1-3 PM and he came at 4:15 PM. I was slightly annoyed because of that, but I appreciated him taking off the shoes at the front door since it was wet outside. I was worried that I would get a general technician, like a washing machine guy, but I asked him some questions and he seemed to know what he was talking about. If you read some of the horror stories in AVS forum, some of the anecdotes include Samsung techs who didn't even know what type of rear projection TV they were looking at (IIRC). Maybe the posters were fabricating the stories but there must be some truth in that right? ;)

Looks like I definitely need a color wheel replacement, and possibly the board as well. I opted to get just the colorwheel fixed since it's vacation time for me and I don't want the TV living in the shop while I'm free. The strange thing is that he said all DLP sets and even LCD sets have fan noise, and I'm curious as to whether or not that is true. AVS members have said their *brandnamehere* sets were quiet but that statement is subjective. There's no such thing as a silent set  The good part is that I found out the lamp is covered by the warranty so I can watch as much as possible without having to worry.

So the colorwheel is coming in next week, and he'll probably come back with it on Tuesday or Wednesday. I'll update then. My take on the service is positive so far, despite the lateness, he got caught up at another house around my neighborhood. The 61" Samsung in fact, and was doing a lamp replacement. We'll see if they finish up properly.

P.C. Richard is a NY (Tristate?) area electronics retailer.

I think the founder recently passed away.

Hmm, I guess it's a east coast thing. It's a chain of retailers on the northeast side (NYC-NJ-others?) and for some reason out lived others like Crazy Eddie and Nobody Beats the Wiz. Though Best Buy and Circuit City are alive and well today.

I remember your thread way back. The tech guy is coming in to "take a look" (quote from the CSR) next Thursday so I'll update this thread then as well. Hopefully I'll only have to update once and not have to wait for the guy to come back with parts, and then update again since the guy brought the wrong parts, and so on.

I hear their radio commercials all the time. Sometimes you can catch a good deal with them but usually I find that Circuit City and Best Buy are cheaper.

Fortunately, my TV broke a month before the Panasonic warranty expired so I went through Panasonic. Hopefully, I won't have to hit up PC Richard for their service.

Ah Lafayette...those were the good old days. I remember that I bought a car stereo, used it for a year and was then able to exchange it for a better model and got full credit for the price I paid on the first one.
Try getting someone to do that now for you.

Also, many people don't know that a few years after Lafayette left the NY market, they changed their name to Circuit City before re-entering the NY market,

I'm curious, how much did the color wheel replacement cost? What's the average lifespan of a color wheel/motor? Was your failure just an anomaly or do they typically only last long enough to get through the warranty period?

The color wheel replacement is costing me nothing, it's all covered by the extended warranty. Like I mentioned in the update, even the lamp is covered which was a pleasant surprise. I'm not sure of the average lifespan of the colorwheel but from what I have read on AVS, there are newer color wheels that are being issued out as replacements that supposedly have better parts and should last a bit longer. It is not uncommon to have a colorwheel start to fail. Mine began dying on me during my warranty period but I ignored it until it worsened. If you are looking to buy these new TVs, I would highly recommend including an extended warranty with the purchase provided that the service covers the lamp ($200) as well.

Whoa, dmcowen674, when and why did you move out?

My family left Long Island back in 1988 along with many thousands of others when the Taxes went up like 400%. NY (Long Island) lost so many people that Florida picked up 2 House of Representative spots while NY lost 2.

Moved to Florida for 2 yrs and then Atlanta last 14 yrs until Divorce and I landed in New Orleans.

BTW, today kicks off Mardi Gras, Parades last until Fat Tuesday Feb 8th.

Glad you got it fixed. I don't believe LCD TV's use this Technology though.

If I ever go for a big TV screen I'll just get a good Projector and keep spare bulbs.

Nope, not fixed yet. :( The guy had to order the part and it's coming in on Tuesday or Wednesday. Shucks. LCD RP sets don't use colorwheel technology, but they have their own share of "problems". But good thing technology is constantly getting better, and more importantly affordable.
