MUAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH.

They are 'interesting' tho. Many cars have paddles and pre-set 'ratios' to give the sense of a manual option. Although these are often badly chosen.

I'd put the $1500 toward the 210hp Works kit...

Don't laugh...Car and Driver and a couple of other mags said the same thing. A computer controls your torque so you're always in the right "gear" (for lack of a better term). It's a neat idea, but I've never driven one.
CVTs are not as efficient as standard manual transmissions, in terms of both power efficiency and fuel economy.

everyone's favorite car, the g35 sedan, in japan is offered with a CVT and well it is more fuel efficient by 1 MPG from what i remember reading. I think it was .1 seconds slower in 0-60 and had 8 computer selectable "gears" on a paddle shifter.

the automatic was somethign like 1mpg less city than the manual, and was .2 seconds slower 0-60 from what i remember

Woah here, The S does NOT have a CVT transmission. It is a normal 6 speed auto. The only CVT is on the normal Cooper.

That being said, don't get an auto in a Cooper anything. It makes baby Jesus cry... :(

Really? It was listed as an option on their order site. The convertibles are a new model year, maybe they added it?

Anyway, I'm probably going to get a manual so my wife doesn't drive it. Just thought this was discussion worthy :D

CVT is new for the S in 2005.

Where are you guys getting this?!?

The transmission in the S is a 6-SPEED AUTOMATIC. Just go on their website and look.

I was just on the Mini website, they list the auto option as a "CVT with a Steptronic mode"

I drove several centrifical clutch type toys growing up, they really sucked, as did the first generation of CVT equipped cars (the Subaru Justy was awful), but I've since driven a CVT Honda & was very impressed.

I'd suggest driving one to see if it's something you'll like.

The description on Mini's website is ambigous, can't imagine a CVT with a Steptronic option though...

I would say a steel chain qualifies as a mechanical (albeit lossy) linkage. Audi's CVT uses a flexible steel chain.

it's not a steel chain on a gear with teeth though. It's a steel chain over a smooth cone-- so hydrolic pumps are needed to keep the chain from sliding up or down the cone.

That is the Cooper, not the S.
