my friend sent this to me. Your help is appreciated :)

Hey I have a few questions. I'm going up north tomorrow to change the service panel over to breakers. I don't know what size the panel is that is up there already. Pretty sure it's a 60 amp but not positve. I looked at the one in my basement and it's a 100 amp. When I add up the breaker amps it's over 100 amps. Is that right? Also to cut power to the house/panel I just turn the meter on the out side of the house right?

Don't you need to call the electric company to kill the power? 100 and 200 are pretty common sizes.

I don't think it's legal, at least it isn't in CA, to do that type of electrical work unless you are a licensed electrician.

Yes it is right. The main breaker will flip at 100 amps but the individual circuits (10,20,25 whatever) can add up to more than 100 because they are not all in use at the same time.

As far as it being legal the homeowner is allowed to do it but it still requires a permit/inspection and yes the power should be turned off at the meter.

California shouldn't be compared to any other state.

Let's put it this way then, I wouldn't want a n00b installing a service panel on my house even if it is legal.

In Michigan, you don't have to be a licensed electrician (edit: to work on you own house) to install a new panel. You do, however, have to call the power company to shut off service.

All you need in CA is a permit. The only "License" Electricians get in CA is a Contractor's License. The contractor's License Test is primarily about Contract law 65% and Technical 45%.

if your friend has to ask about why breakers add up to more than the panel amp rating, then he shouldnt be doing electrical work

as someone said before, all the circuits arent in use all the time, and the power company would need to turn off the feed to the panel from the pole

I managed to replace my old fuse box with a breaker box, with the wires still live. Scary? Hell yeah. Stupid? Hell yeah. Was I super super super super careful? About as careful as you can be, short of calling the electric company to shut off the power. :)

I highly don't recommend it.
