Any dog owners?

A week ago i got a golden retriever for free. Its a purebred and a female (yes its gonna bleed). Well it barks like crazy and my gf and I dont know what to do about it. The neighbors have already been to our doorstep to exchange unkind words and today we got a notice from Animal Control on our door knob.

The dog only barks when we're not around it or when another dog can be heard barking. What the f can I do other than give up the dog?

and what is the proper way to train my dog? rolled up newspaper? sharp squirts of water in the face? firm taps on the nose? im open to suggestions here

Cats > Dogs.

Incorrect.

Actually after a week of dog ownership im starting to see the truth to his statement.

Is this your first dog or something?

WTF.

This is my first big dog and my gf's 3rd. Neither of us have ever had to be the primary care owners of our previous pets.

Spray it with water or pop it in the nose. Works on mine.
Now I just tell her to shut up and she does but without further traning she is still going to bark until told to stop/

Since its when your not around a shock collar is probably best.

WTF. Did you go into this thinking it was gonna be extremely easy or something?

I'm a firm believer that most bad/disobedient dogs are a result of bad owners.

I agree.

Bark collar.

Each time he barks...bzzt! He'll get the message real quick.

Haha, we used one of those to train one of our dogs and my dad dared me to try it. So I pressed it up against my neck and barked. It hurt like a SON OF A B!TCH!! My dad laughed so hard he cried. :|

My sisters golden retreiver had to be retarded or the most stubborn creature on earth...

He'd bark, then wince, bark, wince, bark, wince.

Until it was almost painful to look at. I think the vet suggested that they remove it because the dog could not learn that she would get a shock every time she barked. You could keep the same dog out of the room by lowing a broom handle at an angle across the doorway.

I'm not sure why people find barking THAT horrifically annoying. There are far more annoying and unpleasant sounds one can have in a suburban or apartment environment.

..Have you ever heard a dog that won't stop barking (and being the only noise)?

Haha, no kidding. Like the sound of my upstairs neighbors bowling...

A good old fashioned beating always seems to do the trick for me...

...wimpering in pain is much less annoying than barking...

J/K...

I see the J/K but just wanted to say pain is not necessary. Like when I said a pop to the nose. It doesn't have to hurt. One of the best ways to train a dog is to show it you are disappointed (same with kids). This doesn't work on some of the dumber breeds though.

Unfortunately in the OP's case it is when he is not around so a shock collar may be the only option.

It is very fvcking annoying.

The dog does not bark when they are around, so the various manual methods will not work. The shock collar will.
