A little background. 20 yo male, 160 lbs, 6' 3". I eat well and run. Last night I had a really bad pain right over my heart. It was specific on my chest, not really a broad feeling. I can feel it a lot when I inhale. It's gone on and off for the past day.

Men in my family have a history of heart problems, and I had a bad murmur when I was growing up. Do I have a pulled or strained muscle, or is it my heart itself? I'm going to the doctor tomorrow, hopefully...

Get it checked out. Heart issues are nothing to play around with.

It may be nothing, but better safe than sorry.

I'm going tomorrow, but I'm kinda concerned...nearest ER is a long ways from here, so I'm better off waiting till tomorrow...

It's likely not your heart, but with your history of a murmur, you should get it checked out, tomorrow is fine, I'd put money on pleurisy, but please get it checked out.

Perhaps it is heartburn? Acid reflux? Take an antacid and see if that helps. Watch for burping, an indication that the antacid is doing its neutralization magic.

Note: Not a doctor.

Great logic there.

<man having heart attack> I don't want to drive 60 miles to the nearest ER, I'll just wait until tomorrow. I"m better off waiting anyways.

/man dies 2 hours later.

I hate that. Seems to help if I try to sit straight when I'm at the computer all day.

Dear thehstrybean,

Yes, I think you definitely should put off getting your heart checked.

Best wishes,

I get that sometimes, ever since I was a kid. All of a sudden, I can't take a deep breath. Lasts for awhile, then it's gone.

If the pain gets worse with breathing (meaning worse with inhalation, better with exhalation), it generally involves the intercostal muscles, (i.e. pleurisy, etc).

A few questions to think about:
Are you feeling nauseous, light-headed, weakness, profusely sweating? Generally cardiac conditions cause symptoms such as these.

Does the pain radiate anywhere, neck, arm, across the back?

Do you have a personal history of heart problems?

Does it get worse with exertion? (lifting objects, walking up stairs, etc). Does anything make it better, like medications, laying down, etc.

When did this pain start? What exactly were you doing?

Given your age, weight, and activity level, the odds of this being a cardiac event are pretty low. And childhood murmurs are generally benign, and resolve on their own. Did they tell you what type of murmur you had?
