I haven't had pay TV in years and just get by using my HD receiver and a pair of rabbit ears to get the 7 local channels. I'm finishing up the theater room in the basement and was thinking of getting the Bronze package they offer for $25 which includes 25 stations in 1080p. I was wondering if anyone had their service and what you thought of it? Also, any way to get a deal?

Thanks.

That's the one I have. I love it. Scifi and USA HD with the DVR = FTW. Just keep looking at ads in your local paper and you should be able to find one. I have a ViP722 DVR running a 60" HDTV and a 32" SDTV and a 211 running a 40" HDTV. Love the high def.

I've had nothing but problems since the "Update" to Turbo HD.
I constantly lose the satellite signal and I have audio issues.

My understanding is that only the Video on Demand in Turbo HD is in 1080p. Does anybody have the Dish Turbo HD DVR? I assume it only outputs 1080p via HDMI?

Their is no specific Turbo HD DVR. Both the 622 and 722 are capable of outputting 1080p signals via their HDMI output as is the non DVR model the 211. Keep in mind that the only programming that is sent out as 1080p is Video On Demand programming. The turbo campaign is more of a campaign advertising the amount of HD programming that Dish has along with the fact that they're switching all of their HD programming to MPEG4.

The 722 is a very nice HD DVR but like any other piece of electronics everybody has their opinion as to whether or not they like it. You may want to find a local retailer in your area and play around with their showroom unit a bit.

Has nothing to do with the package you subscribe to.
That is a problem with cabling, dish outside, etc.

Dont be so sure about that. I have had issues like his so many times I have lost count, I have had them out to check the setup probably 6 times now. I have had 4 receivers all connections replaced and still was having issues. Latley it has been fine, so I dont really know what was going on, the last time they came out I had 83 signal losses the day before and this was with a new receiver and new connections.

Have they replaced the LNBF on the dish at all? Because all the symptoms that you describe generally point to an LNBF failure.

I dont know what they did, but when I 1st got Dish I wasnt on HD so as of a few months ago the dish itself was also brand new since they had to install the HD dish. Its been a very weird issue cause all of a sudden its just been running fine and it appears to have been right around the time they did the HD turbo HD thing. I am not on turbo HD I have the top 200 package then added the HD service, its ONLY been issues with the 2 TV's running off the HD receiver also, the other 2 TV's running off the el cheapo receiver never seems to have issues.

Could still be an issue with the LNBF that was installed or the switch if there's one present in your installation. I've seen installs where one port on the LNBF went bad and the other one continued to work normally.

I Have dish, quit using cable do to cost. The one thing I dont like about dish is that most of there HD content is in stereo were as cable had it in dolby. I like the picture quality a lot better on dish network over Cable though.
I also ask a customer rep why they only had a few that were in Dolby and she said they are working to change that.

My LNBF was replaced when they upgraded my 942 to a 722.
There are threads on dbstalk about the software issues. I am running 6.12 right now.
Here's one:

My HD channels use either Dolby Digital or Dolby PL, you sure its not a receiver issue for you? Assuming you use one of course.

Not a receiver issue at all, if you look at the info it will state that it is being broadcast in store, some say that they are Dolby but even some of the PVP one are in Stereo. If yoi look at all the Hd channels for HBO, Startz , Encor TBS etc and hit the info button it willsay that it is being broadcast in Stereo.

Thanks man, that's a big help. I knew I was right about that, but somebody I know keeps insisting that you can get 1080p out of component with DISH.

Can you point me to anything official from Dish that specifically says that you can only receive 1080p via HDMI? I couldn't find any mention of 1080p in any of the manuals manuals.

You can't rely on that.
The program info comes from tribune media services and not dish.
I have seen programs in HD that were not labled as HD, but clearly were.
And then just the opposite , labeled HD in the guide and were definitely not HD.

Google HDCP
It isn't a technical limitation of component, so yes component can do 1080p just fine.
It is the mpaa that makes dish block it on component.

Dont forget the origional air date info, that says like 1-01-07 etc when a movie was 1st shown in like the middle of 2008.

I know all about HDCP. That doesn't mean that Dish TV agreed to play along with the MPAA on its VOD broadcasts.

Don't forget Microsoft's Xbox 360 upgrade outputting 1080p via VGA--no HDCP there.

It was in one of the technical chats that dish has .
The MPAA is also the reason you cannot keep some PPV recorded but for a limited amount of time.

Yea I called Dish up and talked to the tech support, we spent a lot of time tiring to figure out why none of the HD channels other than some paid per view should up as Dolby. He did a lot of research and found that there was another company that put the info on the channel and that they were in Dolby if the feed to them was in Dolby.

My question is if you order the $32.99 package with no locals what are the hidden fees. I don't care about upfront promos, I want to know how much it is going to cost me per month (before taxes) when the promos expire.

I couldn't get their site to work, I wanted this setup.

$32.99 package NO local
1 HD DVR
1 HD box

If this comes out to more than $37.99, I'll pass.

Edit: after sitting five minutes on the "design your system" page, I see the additional crap fees. The main one that is hidden is the $5.98 a month they charge for a DVR. Pure crap. And then $7 for each additional TV.

If I wanted to spend $46 a month on TV I would just go to cable.

That was my question too. They advertise a price, like 19.95 or 24.95 and then the fine print says you have to pya 9.95 for access or something and there are probably mega taxes. My Verizon FIOS advertised at $69.95 for my phone/internet but my bill was about $87 or something. WTF, they lie out their asses about the cost. At least Time Warner Cable, if they tell you the internet is $29.95, that is what you get billed for. I am about to sign up for the $39.95 3 month deal so I expect that will be my final cost for TV service, and that includes HDTV. I don't think I'm allowed to have a dish at my appartment complex.

I hear you on the fees. But .......... you'll pay a fee to the cable company for a DVR too. Probably more. I'm not defending anyone here. I think it's a crock. But it is what it is. How many TV's and in what configuration (HD, SD)? They have receivers that can feed two TV's at once. Different programming and the whole nine yards. The point being, do you need two receivers?

You are allowed to have a dish per FCC rules. The issue is whether you have a line of site to the satellites. Apartments, homes, condos can all have a satellite dish. HOA's will have to live with it. It's your legal right under FCC rules.
