The cost for DVR service is mainly because even when you purchase the box for like $199 from DirectTV you do not own the box, it is a lease. The boxes that they give out for things like HD DVR sell for $400 - $500 so they recoup that with a monthly lease fee.

Wanna know something that makes me cringe? Last month I threw out an early Sony DirecTV HD reciever. Damn thing cost me a grand and a few years ago it became useless. Took me years to throw that thing away. 🙁

Oh, and at the same time I threw out a DirecTivo box that was no longer useable too. 🙁

Please tell me you got replacements for free.

Actually, yes but only for the HD box. I no longer wanted SD DVR but as soon as the HD DVR came out I got some.
