Any Difference Between running....

Alright, i'm moving to apartments for college soon and am staying with 3 other roomates.

I play gaming ALOT (competitive leagues) and i am afraid if i'm sharing my connection with 3 roomates i might lag alot because they might be using torrents or P2P network sharing.

Could i get by this if i bought my own connection and payed $50 a month for it, while they shared there own connection and payed $50 a month for it from the same ISP?
 
depends on the isp...im 99% sure comcast stopped the use of dual modems in the same household. you could always setup some QoS on your router to ensure yourself enough bandwidth.

I understand where your coming from...in a match, 1on1 clutch situation the slighest little hicup could cost you the round, or even the game. i usually disable wireless when it comes time, just in case. *terrorists win*

and of course comcast has to be the company i will be going through. oh well, i guess splitting the cost of a monthly bill 4 ways will have some benefits (having more spending money)

in the end i probably will just split it 4 way, i will just let my roomates know when i have a match and i'm sure they will understand. all of us will be majoring in game design 😀
 
The big question here is what kind of service?

If you're using a cable modem, the entire cable segment shares the same bandwdith. Two cable modems in the same house won't have ANY positive effective on bandwidth available.

DSL, however, is NOT a shared technology - You get your whole speed one each line. If you get a separate DSL from your roommates, you'll get your own dedicated bandwidth.

Best advice: Make sure you have enough bandwidth to support what you all want to do. If you're worried about them overrunning the circuit with P2P, etc. go out and spend the extra cash on a gaming router. to do some QOS to guarantee bandwidth for your gaming. Probably the long-term cheapest option, in any case.

not sure how much bandwidth is need for Upload on games if they have P2P program running and they are sharing that could easily give you problems.. my VOIP phone at home will have problems if I am sharing too much. Some routers have prioritizing features.. if yours does you might just "accidentally" make yours the priority, similar to QOS
 
Seperate DSL account FTW.

I've got one of those DLINK Gaming routers and I have to say that I like it. I purchased it mainly so that every port I had would be gigabit but the QoS has sure been nice.
