Any difference between NIC and onboard 10/100/1000?

Is there any advantages/speed differences between a 10/100/1000 NIC and the onboard 10/100/1000 Marvell & nvidia nforce 4 sli ports on my mobo?

Some discrete NICs support features that normally aren't present in an onboard NIC, such as teaming or booting from iSCSI, or they may allow you to use a connection type other than RJ-45.

For the majority of desktop users, there isn't going to be a measurable difference between using an integrated NIC and a discrete NIC.

Ok thanks. I was just curious.

nvidia nforce 4 onboard are notoriously bad.

Spending $27 on an Intel PCI-E CT NIC can help in some instances. Avoid discrete NICs from other companies.

Since you have already the onboard you can try it.

If it does not work well for your specific purpose (it works well for my usage of Giga LAN), then you can buy an Intel 1G NIC.

ebay -> NC360T - $30 for dual port low/high profile. guaranteed to rock your world with esxi and built in drivers for every o/s.

i've seen some strange stuff with the broadcom nc382 and the TOE isn't all that hot.

I was just curious because I've been working on streaming movies through my ps3 (I've posted several threads on this) and I can't get anything over 12mbps wired or wireless so I was thinking maybe it's the ports on my mobo. My router's an older w54rtg(?) and I'll be getting an E3000 delivered on Monday so I'll test that out.

it's the router it's only g so 12mbps is not bad.

Just an update, but the new router did not increase my speeds at all. Actually, it decreased my wireless speed to my ps3 by 1mbps lol. I haven't tried to hook it up via wire yet as I'm having some issues with my server, but I'm about to give up. I'm going to try a bridge with my old router and run tomato and see how these options go...

If I recall correctly PS3 only supports b/g radios.
