Strange Days is very well done movie that is completely overlooked.

I also liked Strange Days.

Reminds me that I should mention:

The Thirteenth Floor

which no one seems to have watched.

waaaaay better than the Matrix.

Fahrenheit 451

Fire in the Sky (supposedly based on a true story, but it is definitely sci-fi)

For awesome sci-fi cheese- I Come In Peace (Spoiler: You leave in pieces asshole! )

Alien Nation

Silent Running (tree hugger message pisses some people off, but still a classic that every sci-fi fan should see once.)

for the cheese factor:

The Phantom of the Paradise
Battle Beyond the Stars
Space Hunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone
Metal Storm: The Destruction of Jared Sin
You can't go there, and not mention Solarbabies 😛

edit: I think Tank Girl should be mentioned too.
I haven't seen those 2.

There are other cheesy sci-fi movies out there.

First Spaceship on Venus
Planet of Vampires
Journey to the Seventh Planet
Queen of Outer Space
Night of the Blood Beast
The Incredible Melting Man
The Navy vs The Night Monsters

Holy crap, blast from the past! I remember seeing this when I was kid and loving it. I bet it doesn't hold up.

Chalk up another recommendation for "Event Horizon."

It's simply the best merger of Sci-Fi and horror I have seen since "Alien."

Also check out Sunshine, just make sure to turn it off about 2/3 of the way through
Yes, after they find the first ship and find out what happened to the crew. Up to that point it's an absolutely fantastic sci-fi movie, with almost palpable tension over the situation. That gets pissed away REAL fast.

Myself, I liked 2010, the Sci-Fi mini-series version of Dune, Screamers (terribly underrated IMO; the sequel is mediocre at best with a horribly telegraphed ending), A Boy & His Dog (oh, the ending...), Pi.

While not science fiction per say, see Free Enterprise. It has more sci-fi movie and pop culture references than any other movie I can think of, and you'll laugh your ass off at William Shatner.

bleeb: it's called This Island Earth- great flick
I absolutely love Event Horizon- I think it's way under-rated myself. Sam neil is one of my favorite actors- thought he was great in it. Here's another Sam Neil movie I love- more Horror than sci-fi I guess- "In the Mouth Of Madness". Thought it was an original idea, with great actors in it. Also loved The Fountain- Hugh Jackman impressed the hell out of me in that movie- it got a little out there, in some of the concepts, but it's nice to see a movie that makes you think once in a while.
