Dual USB with another port for charging would be even better.
I know, sounds like an extremely odd request so I'll explain.
The tablet it going to be used in a custom car stereo setup. Goal is to make everything entirely modular so upgrading any portion of the chain will be easy. Due to this, planning on using audio over USB and an external DAC which is the reason why I'm looking for 4.1(needed for the external DAC) and a device that doesn't use USB to charge(plan is to have the device appear as a "normal" stereo in use outside of greatly increased flexibility obviously).
Ideally the device would also have a SD slot or 2(well, dual USB would be better as we could use a multi TB HDD) as working around the limits of on board memory can be done, it does make for a cumbersome setup.
The Nexus 7 was the obvious first idea, but it was either sacrifice the audio quality fairly heavily(no tablet's DAC is close to a dedicated unit) and give up any hopes of reasonable storage(music will be entirely FLAC/HD FLAC- 32GB isn't enough) or go with some extremely lame plug swapping for keeping the device charged. Was looking at the Tab 2, but it appears to be lacking dual USB and/or a way to charge it without taking up the data port.
The Nabi2 actually has the hardware, but it is on 4.0 and who knows when we will see 4.1 hit for that device(to be fair, the target of the device would be perfectly happy staying on 4.0 for the life of the device). Another up side to this is it also has a HDMI output which would give us some interesting video options, but the viewing angle on the device isn't up to the Nexus 7 by any means(head on it isn't bad at all, but off angle is a bit 'meh').
Nook devices don't work on multiple layers unfortunately, besides the data/USB combined they also used odd voltages for charging which would present us with a few issues.
Those are the devices I have that I can try on hand, no Galaxy Tab 7"s kicking around unfortunately nor any other offering that may fit the bill. Off angle screen viewing is a reasonable issue, but not one that I am willing to deal with if we can hit all the other factors. Overall performance really isn't that big of an issue as we are going to be using a completely custom UI to make it feel natural and it is very simple to drive, the original Nook Color handles it smoothly.
BTW- I listed Android as they have the only 7" device that I am aware of that supports audio over USB and comes in the 7" form factor which *very* nicely mounts into a standard double DIN slot with relatively little effort.
Any ideas/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
