Looks like a good plan, I'm going with it.
 
Looks like your questions may have been answered but I wanted to chime in that even though I don't live in D.C. me and my other half travel down there pretty frequently for pleasure and I have never had a problem finding my way around. In fact I think it is a pretty easy city to drive through.

We also used the Metro for the first time and it is pretty easy to use as well.
