Any danger running a P3 without a fan just to test?

I would like to fireup a used P3 I just got, I don't have a fan yet. It's a 1GHZ FC-PGA2, just looking for a couple of opinions as I don't think there is much of a concern with just testing the chip to see if it works.

I wouldn't do it, just to be on the safe side. Those chips heat up mighty quick. If you don't use a fan, are you at least going to use a heatsink?

are u nuts? of course he meant using the HS but no fan with it. He should be able to boot, load windows if he leaves it at default speed(No OC). You can also lower the Vcore by a notch or two and start the PC if you want. Keep the case side(s) open unless you have a good air circulation inside the case. If you run the P3 chip without a HS, you might fry it. Luckly, I was able to boot, get to the BIOS , play around without the HS on a P3 700(defaul speed, default voltage) at work!!!!! Did not fry. amazing..... but don't expect it to load windows without the HS though, hehe.. it'll could fry.

if by 'fan' you mean both a heatsink and fan are missing, then no i wouldn't. if you have a hs but no fan then sure. i ran a p3 700e @ 933 (1.65v) for i don't know how long without the fan working (unintentionally) - after a while i started to notice some quirkiness and checked the chip and sure enough the fan wasn't turning.

Hell, my old P3 800 from before i got really into hardware came without a fan on the heatsink, and i've been running it that way for ~2 years now. The heatsink never even gets that hot either. Only fan in the whole thing other than the power supply is one blowing down towards the heatsink from near the top of the case.

At work our p3 750mhz kept freezing up...and sometimes wouldnt boot past preparing network connections...i checked the bios and the cpu was at like 65 degrees celsius...I opened the case and sure enough the fan on the heatsink was dead.......so my point is that your computer will run crappy with no fan.....but i doubt you would have too much probs as long as you dont stress it or run it for too long....although a 1ghz would probably run a little hotter.........so be careful!!😎

Thanks for all the input, I was talking about running the Chip without a Heatsink and Fan, just to see if it was good or not...but I ran across a Heatsink/Fan unit at Bestbuy that will suffice, thanks again.
