Any countries gonna step up and help the US?

Simple solution:

IF we give money to other countries AND they haven't yet offered significant help
THEN use the $$'s we would've given them for our own needs.

The faster things get normalized down there the better.
Why Canada helps is because we want to AND because we need to.
From a selfish viewpoint we cosume 10% more energy per capita than the US does and getting the Gulf up and runnning again normalizes our fuel prices too as well as everything else those ports in New Orleans bring in. North America is an integrated system.
Of course the US has the money and expertise to get things running again, but how quickly? The US has come to our aid often enough in event of natural disasters its only moral to return the favour. Just as we sent down help in 9/11 we will now too.

I want to say thank you to your country for helping. Thank you, we will not forget.

If a country like India rejected a large amount of foreign $$, then I don't think the US really needs money right now. In addition, a large amount of the 'foreign aid' is merely loans. The US doesn't really need to take up some more loans. Like someone else said, actual manpower and resources would be more beneficial, similar to how the US military was helping out in the Tsunami areas. Aid such as what Canada is apparently sending is more important than a loan.

^^yeah...check again what kind of countries recieve aid. developed countries usually handle their own problems and countries like india and china can now also support themselves without foriegn aid. On top of that, we do not give as much aid as we think we do. Its the lowest of all developed countries. We do not even give a 1/4% of our gdp when countries like japan and france give more than 1/2% of their gdp as aid.

Care to flesh that argument out a bit?

Apparently Canada has offered all sorts of help but we got told to stay home. There are electrical crews, Urban search and rescue teams, DART (our Disaster Assistance Response Team) and many private charities that have attempted to send help and send people but have been told to stay here. So screw that. 🙂 Americans are too good for Canadian help, I guess.

Bush:

?You know,? he said, ?we would love help, but we?re going to take care of our own business as well, and there?s no doubt in my mind we?ll succeed. And there?s no doubt in my mind, as I sit here talking to you, that New Orleans is going to rise up again as a great city.?

...

On Tuesday, President Vladimir Putin sent condolences to President Bush and said Russia was prepared to help if asked.

Boats, aircraft, tents, blankets, generators, cash assistance and medical teams have been offered to the U.S. government in Washington or in embassies overseas.

Offers have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States, the spokesman said.

...

?The German Government is prepared to do all that is humanly possible,? the German embassy said. In his call, German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer assured Rice of Germany?s solidarity with its American friends in a difficult time, the embassy said.

You are saying that countries that have recieved aid in the past should pass it back. Like to explain how that would be done by a piss poor country that will still be rebuilding?

Actually, they are. left weds night

A specialized urban search and rescue team from Vancouver will be joining the rescue efforts in Louisiana in the wake of hurricane Katrina.

B.C. Solicitor General John Les said the province decided to send Vancouver Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) after officials in Louisiana asked for help.

"We're the first non-U.S.-based team to be requested," said Les. "They're going to be helping as many people as they can."

CTV Vancouver has learned that the team will board a plane Wednesday night heading to Lafayette, Louisiana, where local authorities will direct them to devastated areas.

Tim Armstrong, USAR's task force leader, said he's spoken with Louisiana authorities.

"The last conversation that I had with them, they're in a bit of a crisis management mode trying to figure out where the need for teams is, and where the resources are going to be best used," he said.

The 45- person team -- which was dispatched to Southeast Asia after the Boxing Day tsunami -- is equipped to provide emergency room doctors, building engineers and swift water rescue personnel.

How the hell did you get that out of my comment? What part of:

"THEN use the $$'s we would've given them"

is unclear?

Let me put it another way: Countries that are currently receiving aid do not get any additional aid if they do not offer some sort of assistance.

Well, considering the states we are losing, it's not that big of deal. 😉

Such stupidity never fails to amaze me.

Help us do what? We can easily afford to rebuild, especially consdering how miniscule the cost will be in comarison to the Iraq war.

Maybe try to:

1) Find people in the rubble before they die.

2) Give people clean water and food before they die.

It's not the the US is too poor to do anything, it is that the US is simply not able to get aid to everyone right now that needs it.. or have you not been watching/reading the news for the past week?

we coulda so used it. talk of societal breakdown in all reports. rapes and such along with the looting. i mean shooting at cops.. really? its gotta get really sh*t before that happens. but i guess we let em rot for a while like we did with iraq.

They shouldn't have let this go on in the first place. Look at Iraq, we don't need armed thugs roaming the streets. They would be better off if they dealt with the looting harshly and immediately.

How would other countries be able to get AID to Louisiana faster than we can?

Jesus man. It's about getting as many crews there as fast as they can before time runs out. The clock is running. There is so much carnage that even if all the S&R personel that the US has got there right now, there still wouldn't be enough. We're talking about picking through a freakin' metropolis and the surrounding cities and towns. I'm actually surprised they haven't called in even more.

Well, at least the people in authority to make these decisions know enough about the situation to ask for help. Maybe you should call the people in charge in New Orleans and tell them you know more about the situation than you do.

why would we reject manpower? i can see not taking other ppl's money, but if Israel offers their expertise in disasters (and they sure have had their few), why not let their S&R teams go?

Why bother? What help does the US want or need? I am pretty sure the US government cannot possibly do a better job fixing the damage from Katrina with help from other countries than it can do by itself. The only reason we gave money to help Tsunami victims was because the government of Indonesia needed help to take care of all the victims and also rebuild. The US government doesn't need the help, so why would any country give? Do they need to feel good about themselves by giving money to a wealthy country?

Its like this. You are a working stiff and you make $30,000 a year. All of the sudden a tornado comes, destroys your house, and you have nowhere to stay and no a single material possession left. So a multimillionaire friend of yours who lives across the country wires you money to help get everything straightened out. Next year your friend is told a week in advance a hurricane is coming for his house. He moves his family, but his house is destroyed. He's rich, you're still making $30,000 a year, he should be able to feed his family until everything is fixed. Maybe if you lived near him you'd offer him a place to stay, but you're across the country, what can you possibly do? Its not a perfect analogy, but I think it works. Yes there are plenty of people who still need help and don't have millions, but our government SHOULD be able to take care of them.

The US doesn't need money. If there were other countries close enough to send people to help the displaced hurricane survivors I'm sure they would. Maybe Mexico can give us a hand 😉

Sad that you look at things this way - although I imagine this mentality mirrors much of the rest of the world. It's PEOPLE that need help you twit - not the US government. The Red Cross could use all the money it could get to help people in need.

According to this article more than 20 countries have offered to help. I don't know where the OP got the idea that other countries aren't helping or aren't willing to help.

How are third world countries supposed to help? If they had the resources to send us help, then they probably wouldn't need so much of our help in the first place.
