Alcoa will be destroying some beautiful land in Iceland for energy development.
Here are some photos of the land that will be destroyed.

More pics

Here is a link to send protests to Alcoa and the Icelandic government.

Even if you've never been to Iceland, you can look at the pictures and see what a loss to us all it would be if such beauty is demolished for energy consumption.

This thread is not a debate. If you can take 2 minutes and help, please do.

It's none of our business.

Besides, you show a picture of a mountain. It could be any mountain.

It looks like it needs moved to me! It's blocking a great sunset!:D

It looks like a great place for a damn dam!

ALCOA, National Power Company and the Icelandic Government are about to destroy this land for what they claim will be huge financial benefits for Iceland.
I don't think ALCOA is just going to waltz into Iceland and build a dam without approval.

Why protest Alcoa? If they don't destroy your land they'll destroy someone elses nice land instead. That's their business and they aren't going to give a crap.

It's your govt. tho who is prostituting the land for the money, those are the ones to protest (and I filled out that form).

You need to get out more. Go look at the deal with drilling in Alaska. Not only is it destroying tons of habitat for hundreds of different animals including the largest herd of Caribou in Alaska, but it is also destroying beautiful land.

Havnt you ever been outside? Havnt you ever seent he beauty of the winlderness? We are talking about land that has been untouched by mans awful hand!

No, and neither have you. Why people in California, such as yourself, think you know what's best for Alaska or for that matter Iceland, shows the staggering depth of your self-righteous arrogance.

No more staggeringly self-righteous than to assume they don't.

Last I heard there's more Caribou in Alaska now than ever before. And what's all this habitat that's being destroyed. Show some proof.

Also, land that is "untouched by mans' awful hand" is a total waste. The land is there to use as are the resources that are on/below the land.

Level of beauty of the land has no bearing on whether it should be conserved. What if I thought Iceland was ugly? If you're just referring to "wild and unspoiled", fine. I don't see the point of destroying this "beautiful" land just to power an aluminium smelting plant... But if Icelanders have the same "Who gives a damn?" attitude as Americans, how do you expect to stop them?

But we are not to try and influence other countries. Remember, it starts wars and causes terrorism.

Will it have been a waste in 100 years when there is not a spec of forest left on the planet? How about in 300 years when our descendents live on a dustball held together by concrete?

Some people see the sky falling and some don't.

Stop using some much electricity and Alcoa will go away.

Well then, you'd know that polls of actual Alaskans (including Alaskan natives) have for years run about 75% supporting the ANWR project. Oh, and don't hurt yourself "continuing to fight the drilling" from your chair, slick.

Back down before i hurt myself? LOL, that's the funniest thing i've heard in a while. Maybe i should take your ass out to an actual wilderness and see how long you last.

Perhaps there are more Caribou in Alaska now. I hope you realize that the debate over ANWR (or 'anwar' as you are likely used to hearing it) is pretty much over and that it was decided NOT to drill there. So that's a moot point since nothing happening obviously didn't adversely affect the environment. ;)

I don't think that 'untouched by man's awful hand' is a total waste - I don't think that the land exists to be raped for resources. Obviously it must be used for resources, but tremendous expanses of beauty do NOT need to be destroyed to put money into the pockets of some grubby execs and politicians.

Of course, I've also been to the most gorgeous place on earth - White Sands National Monument right near Alamogordo, NM. Yes, homeland of the trinity site. 120 of the 275 sq. miles of gorgeous white sand dunes flanked by two awe inspiring mountain ranges are for the National Monument. The other 155 sq. miles are a weapons testing site, including the well-knowned Trinity site - home of the first atomic blast. :|

"Tremendous expanses of beauty" that a relative few people will ever see are, in my opinion, a waste. I would prefer to have the resources of that land utilized.

I have yet to see anybody prove that land that has been utilized for its resources has been, by definition, raped.

I've been there, up close and personal (i served in the army in a unit specializing in desert warfare), and i'll have to say your idea of gorgeous doesn't sync with mine. Different strokes for different folks though. We staged out of McGregor Range for exercises quite often, and depending on when you were there, i might have been on top of one of those mountains you were talking about, or humping up the side of it. If you had really good eyes, you might have even seen our team testing a UAV in that area about 4 years ago.

If you like that area, you ought to try Nevada sometime, once you get north of say Mercury, NV, there's nothing but desolation. Another place i've gotten to experience firsthand. You'd probably like it.
