Me bought the system back in 2001, with the following specs:
Model 7103Ap
Intel pentium 4 processor
1.3Ghz CPU
128mb samsung ram, PC 800 RD Ram(if im not wrong)
nvidia riva TNT2 Model 64 Pro graphic card, think is 64 mb
creative audio PCI (duno wat model)
Conexant HCF V90 56k data fax PCI modem (but i now using braodband, no use liao)
got 2 front 2 back USB port

Actually. i also duno y i post my specs here..

My question is: I wana upgrade. Can i juz change the board and ram? RD ram is too ex and 128 shared ram is too little for my XP. I open a word program i can wait very long. and i like to multitask. and on many windows at the same time.

Any kind soul can advice me? Am i on the right track to upgrade?

You probably can't just rip it out and replace it.
Even if you could, why just do that?
128MB RAM: you sound like you're trying to say you run XP. Maybe use whole words and phrases next time. Anyway, if you are, nothing less than 256MB RAM will do, and 512 better. RDRAM was and is expensive.
And um, a TNT2 won't be using that, so it's not shared.
P4 1.3GHz: Crap, comparable to Celerons.

So now the real question: what do you use your PC for?

>> yeah, i M running on XP. the first part of my message is juz to post my specs. That's explain the lag in my system. RD ram is still expensive here in sg.
And um, a TNT2 won't be using that, so it's not shared
>> well, I duno wat do u mean by "TNT2 won't be using that" the reason y i say shared memory cos the label on my pc said that is shared.

>> wat do u mean by "Crap, comparable to Celerons." It is stated in my label that is P4 1.3GHz

>> my pc is maining used for surfing the net, work for school. Thinking of taking multimedia module which i guess i really desperate for more ram.

The HW enthusiasts here are (mostly) snobs. :p

Your machine is fine for the 'net and schoolwork . . . just don't expect to play 3D games from later than 2001/2.

The BIGGEST slowdown is that you don't have enough RAM for XP . . . You NEED to add 128MB of RDRAM . . . either bite the bullet and buy more or put up with the slowness. ;)

edit: adding more RAM will make the biggest improvement and is probably the ONLY practical thing you can do (you could get a faster HD and a better videocard - but the system is basically a "waste" .. . . build a new system when you have $$$).

One additional (free) thing you might do. . . . UNinstall all the Compaq "crap" proggies that were preinstalled on your computer . . . better still, do a FRESH install of XP.

to be perfectly honest, there is no one part of your PC that you could upgrade to get amazing performance. Even though RDRAM is expensive, I'd suggest adding another 256MB or so. If you upgraded anything else, you'd have to upgrade EVERYTHING else to make it worthwhile.

ya.. cos to buy a stick of Ram (pc 800) i think can get much more if buying another kind of ram. but in order to use another kind of ram, i need to change the mobo too. therefore the only thing i thought of upgrading is the minmal; mobo and ram. sigh..
I had already uninstall all the crap proggies, and installed as minimal programs i need... still.. CMI.. :(

^^^^^^^ good sugestion

Sorry, but nothing on your old computer is worth saving if you want a faster computer. It would all be a bottleneck to the parts you've upgraded.

You are the only one that can make that call . .. 128MB more RAM is the MINIMUM to make your system noticeably faster.

If you don't want to buy the (dead end) RDRAM your other choice is to 1) settle for the status quo or 2) buy a NEW system (yes, you can build your own and reuse the CD ROM, mouse ,KB, monitor, modem and other accessories - just NOT your Graphics card, CPU, RAM, case and PS).

I'd get the RAM if I were really poor and start seriously saving. ;)

Whatever, it's all relative . . . a NEW computer is gonna be even MORE expensive . . . my whole point was to upgrade the RAM or put up with the slowness. :p
