Was thinking of getting one for light use. Any comments on service or problems with promos?

I'm interested also.

I'll be getting my teenager a phone for x-mas this year and I want it to be pre-paid so I don't get stuck with overages....

I worked at Radio Shack last summer and had to activate and refill a few Tracfones. They suck horribly. But that is my opinion as someone servicing them, not a customer.

Just go with Verizon's prepaid. Tracfone uses the Verizon network.

Tracfone = Ghetto.

You will not save money with a pre-paid, but do as you wish. Overages are not even an issue if you require your teenager to pay if they go over. First couple of times, and I bet they never go over again. So, since you are against personal responsability, why not just get them a regular phone and pay however much they want you to? Sounds like that is what you are going to do anyway.

Pre-Paid is just asking to get eaten alive. Regular phones -- monitoring usage, and requiring your son or daughter to be an "adult" will work much better.

The best option is get the $100 card good for 1 year (670 mins)... it works fine for me and comes out to about 60 mins a month and 8 bucks a month.

I like the AT&T link, looks much sweeter deal than Tracfone. More minutes, $100 1 year card, how is customer service for issues. I've read about horror stories on Tracfone.
Anybody got any links to hot deal on this now. Will go over to
AT Hot Deals

Thanks all for your comments

Well you deal with cingular so I would expect pretty crappy servie, then again I dont think any cell company has good service... Ive never really had a problem with them though and have had it 8 months and had to call once. Since its prepaid you dont have much in the way of issues.

When I was looking for one it was between virgin mobile and ATT, but I saw that ATT was alot cheaper so I went with them. I actually found about this deal on the fatwallet forums.

I have cingular nationwide now and am happy with the service. I travel a lot and even in remote areas, if I can get a signal I usually can make a call. Now I'm not saying it is perfect but I feel it does better than some of the other carriers.
I do not see a way to sign up online with att at this time, I guess I'm going to have to visit a local store and see what they can do for me.

other than the phone would be a little bulky (i have the nokia 6xxx), the phones are over-priced ($99 for the nokia, plus one year with 300 minutes for me), and the minutes are a bit pricy, it is pretty good.

the service was provided by verizon in my case (NY area).

i had it for one year, then just got a T610 (free) with t-mobile with my brother on the family plan for $50 a month (plus tax) with 300 shared anytime and free nights/weekend/t-mob to t-mob, plus $100 rebate each phone.

so for t-mobile, on average it's about $200 each line for a year, plus a free color camera phone (it was back in the beginning of 2004), plus tax it'd be about $250? i spent about $120 on the tracfone with 550 minutes total for one year.

yes you'd be saving some money, but i'm just saying that if you live in the city, getting a contract is not that bad (about $10 more a month?)

as for reception, surprisingly, the tracfone (verizon) has better reception than t-mobile in the suburbs (long island). otherwise, both t-mobile and tracfone were flawless for me.

hope my experience helps. i'd just get a regular $30 plan then get the cheapest phone that offers the most rebate.

I have a tracfone. It's perfect for me as I only use it occasionally. I got it as a gift. It has been flawless everywhere I have tried it in SC, NC and VA. I have no complaints.

that reminds me of something. you'd have to call up tracfone and change your area code if you relocate... or pay 2 minutes per roaming minute. that is a big big minus for commuters who travel around the country. keep that in mind. you can only change area code for 5 times i think!

If you don't like overages check out Sprint's Fair and Flexible. If I were to get a phone I would definately check it out. Unless you use the exact same number of minutes each month it will be cheaper.

And whoever said that you won't save money with a prepaid is right, unless you NEVER use it. Prepaid is much more expensive unless you never use your phone.

I can't seem to find anywhere selling the ATT free2go phones and plan. Even online they do not show anything. CS at ATT is a joke, they don't even know why and just play the transfer game.
Anybody have a good link to sign up with Free2go or any suggestions.
