Any coin collectors in the forums?

Holy shit. I've got 42 Morgan and Peace Silver dollars. Most are ~1898 and 1921.

It seems 1921 is a good value year for the Peace design, without any special minting from what I can find?

I have 6 from 1921, but these are Morgans.

Oh well.

large stack of buffalo nickles in the back, including the rolls. also a pile of 1887 Indian Head pennies. Dimes, nickles, quarters, and 4 1964 Kennedy Half Dollars (1 in great condition)

but doesn't that violate laws or some such--especially for money in circulation? (destruction of federal tender).

i read a rather fascinating article a few years back regarding the problem with pennies--no one wants them or likes them, at times the copper is worth more than the value of the penny, and a couple of penny recycling businesses that sprung up.

One dude was collecting dump-trucks full of pennies and melting them down for the copper (the older, pre-1981? coins that were actually copper--now they are 95% zinc, correct?)

Melt value just means that the metal value is more than the coin value. You will get the silver value if you sell them. It is perfectly legal to melt the older silver and gold coins.

Some coins are the opposite. The rare coin value is far above the metal value, so when you sell, you don't get metal value, but coin market value.

The same Washington quarter, with a mint error, might be worth $1K. You'd be a fool to just get melt value, or to even think about melting the coin.

I just bought a $50 Gold Buffalo coin for $6.95 + S&H. I'm as happy as a pig in sh!t.


I kid. I don't go out of my way to collect coins but if I happen to come across something in my change I'll usually keep it. I know we have a stash of silver dollars, some wheat pennies, buffalo nickles, and some other coins at my parents. Probably not worth that much though.

We inherited a collection that was inherited from a relative who passed away in the early 1960's. Given that habits and wealth of the original owner of the collection, we strongly suspect that the coins are rather valuable. BUT, we haven't got a clue how to assess the value of those coins. He was known to collect a lot of valuable things - and never bothered collecting things that were relatively common. Thus, we strongly suspect that these weren't just ordinary old coins, but were many of the rarer old coins.

I haven't got a clue though, how to get a realistic appraisal of the coins. I don't trust the coin dealers in my area (I know a couple of them & wouldn't trust them with anything of value - their career is based on buying low from unsuspecting sellers & selling high.) Where do I find a coin appraiser who would give an honest appraisal???

Buy a Whitman's RedBook and go over the collection yourself, very simple.

Yeah a old shop i went to used to sell silver dollars for about what silver went for if and when the dealer had them i would buy a few,always alot of 1922 peace and 1921 morgans while common they make for fun coins still.

Now a alot of shops have pipe dreams of selling silver dollars even the common 1921 morgan for about $40 when silvers not even $33?

Found a few gold plated state quarters when i used to do roll searchs back in like 2002-2007 .

Half dollars yielded me some incredible finds one week in the summer of 2007 one bank 2 $20 prestine rolls of 1964-d kens.
/\ This was in camarillo ca.

Couple weeks later in simi valley,ca i found $40 in walkers with each roll marked with a date 1943,1944,1945 and another roll with assorted 1930-1947 coins .

Edit: that holiday season i sold them all for about $3 each and used the money for what i would consider my first gaming computer

All the ones from 1921 and on in those pics are worth whatever silver is maybe about $30 each...other ones depend on where they were made.

Above the d and o on the back where it says dollar there could be s,o,or a pair of cc.
That will determine their value with the cc coins fetching the nicest premium .

I'm not really a collector, the oldest I have are some pennies from WW2 era (I think 1943). They were made from zinc coated steel since copper was being used for the war. They aren't worth much, but it's a neat piece of history to pass on to the grandkids I guess.

You'd have to pay me quite a bit of money to pick up 1,000 pennies off the ground around a gas station, even in the span of a year. Yikes.
I collect coins long enough to turn them into cash at the bank.

I like to collect old, rare, weird or foreign coins. I have coins from Japan, China, Turkey, Uruguay, Britain and other places. I have no idea where my collection is though, it's in a box in my closet somewhere.

Nope BF2 and UT3 and i had some money already for a e6750 mobo the ram and everything else...the coins i sold made it so i could afford a 8800gts 512mb

Do wish i kept them but even today i would have traded them prob for my early copper coins..something that gains value while not reflecting based on silver value.

Perhaps carson city morgans would be back in my collection or silver key date coins but wanna complete a set iv'e tried to do since i was 10 first
