Any Cigar Smokers?

I used to, haven't in decades. Was offered one a year ago, declined. Haven't puffed tobacco since 1985. Have never missed it.

I was at the Big Smoke in Las Vegas for 2013.

And, there was one morning, where makers talked about,.. cigars. They mentioned that the American market typically goes for larger vitolas and fuller bodied cigars.

Where as European markets go for smaller vitolas (robusto was the largest I think) and lean towards cigarillos.

Medium bodied cigars are great - there are quite a few with wonderful flavors. But, I do tend to lean more towards full bodied sticks.

I've written off milds.

I think part of the mystique is because when Cuban imports got banned, there just weren't that many "premiuim" cigar manufactures outside of Cuba, so the quality of what was available in the US was pretty lousy. As a result, the Cuban Cigar took on this aura of the perfect cigar.

Now, though there are so many excellent manufacturers outside of Cuba, that you can get top notch cigars easily.

However, there is still a richness in some Cuban cigars that give them a different taste, and the mystique is nice when you want to celebrate a special event. My oldest has First Communion this weekend, and after he goes to bed, I intend to celebrate with the grandfather and God father by lighting up the Cuban cigars I brought back from Jamaica.

Sure - I've got other excellent cigars, but why not add a little ambiance?

Yeah I agree 100% I would say medium is my sweet spot but if I'm smoking all day I will eventually go to full since my pallet will be a bit off I guess from all the smoking.

I'd say ring gauge 46 is my average size. I don't smoke much larger than that.

I haven't tried it yet 🙂 But I have been tempted by some of the Man O War samplers. It's been chilly/rainy here, and I don't smoke cigars in the house since it drives the fiancee crazy so haven't smoked much of anything (maybe had only 6 or 7 cigars since Jan.)

I need to smoke some of my "stock" before I even think about experimenting or buying anything new 🙂
 
Cigars have become my replacement for cigs if I ever have more than a few drinks. So basically I smoke a cigar on rare occasions. At this point I just hop into a local place that has a humidor, pick out a cigar or two, and pay. Have no idea why I am buying what I'm buying other than a friend bought one for me before.

So what is a good, reasonably priced, cigar I might want to try to understand the differences between types? If it helps at all the ones I have been getting are Romeo & Juliet. Probably very cheap and close to considered the 'Natty Light' of cigar snobbery.

Romeo and Julieta cigars are great.

Churchill's are named Churchills after the Romeo and Julieta Churchill which is named after Winston Churchill since he loved their cigars so much.

I would say they are probably closer to the Duvel of cigars. Very nice, pleasant, and tasty, but not very intense. Abundant, but, not overly so.

(note, it was Cuban brand at the time, but after the whole nationalization thing, they moved to Dominican. And now there's both Cuban and Dominican brands. I haven't had the Cuban, but the Dominican version is good)

It'll be a while before I'm ready to restock my humidor as it's quite full from too much purchasing last year 🙂

That said, I buy a lot from Cigars International. Usually I buy from them or from pipesandcigars.com since I smoke both a Pipe and Cigar, and both sites carry good selections of both tobaccos 🙂

Interesting, I had no idea. To be honest someone handed me one of those once and I enjoyed it so that is what I continued buying.

Very nice, at $10 a pop, it's outside of my "day to day" smoke, but, I may order 1 to try them out next time I throw together an order.

Lately I've had a CAO Brasilia (I love them), and a Acid Kuba Kuba (ehh, I think I'll avoid infused cigars for the future.) And, best of all, though only a petite Corona, I did have a Partagas Mille Fleur over the weekend. Usually I like something a bit bigger, but a good habano is a good habano, even if it only lasts 30-40 minutes.
 
You aren't supposed to inhale them, right?

Just feels like hot smoke in my mouth. Never had a taste, even with a nice real Cuban.

Sort of fun to pass the time with though, blowing rings and such.

The acids in the cigar make them very uncomfortable to inhale into the lungs. If you don't taste it, then it's not for you.

You can try "retrohaling" (blowing the smoke out of your mouth through your nose) which will make it easier to pick up all the aroma/flavor, but, in general, you smoke a cigar by drawing the the smoke in your mouth only.

I smoke a pipe a lot more than cigars, though Ive opted to quit all tobacco usage for 2015 since Im sick of paying $50 a month more than everybody else for health insurance... 🙁
