Any cheap KB+M for PS3?

I want to play FPS on my console but cannot tolerate the controller. It sucks, always has and always will for fps. I have a Logitech MX5500 combo but don't want to keep switching between my computer and PS3...

Are you looking to use a regular KB+mouse, or one of those keyboard+mouse devices that emulate a gamepad? I thought only a limited number of PS3 games supported KB+mouse natively - or has that changed?

It hasn't changed. Very few PS3 games support KB+M, the only example I'm even aware of is UT3.

you do know that as of right now, only 1 game uses native kb+m support on PS3 (at least to my knowledge) and that is the most recent unreal tourney game.

and no, using controllers on consoles for fps doesn't suck, it's that you suck at using controllers for FPS on console.

Oh snap!

In his defense, some console controllers are arguably better than others for FPS, but he probably wouldn't be interested in the one I'm thinking of. ;)

@Dari - it takes longer to get used to console FPS controls, but once you do it's really not bad.

As far as I know, any standard USB keyboard and mouse will work on the PS3, but only one game that I am aware of supports it for in-game controls: Unreal Tournament 3.

This is actually true of the 360, too... only software that uses a mouse is FFXI, though.

I'm actually in Dari's camp on this: I'd like the freedom to choose my control method.

I guess I suck at these games then. I tried Black on PS2 and could not tolerate it. Then I tried a bunch of FPS demos for PS3 but could not tolerate it either. My left hand just wasn't made for accuracy...

EDIT: Also, using two joysticks for what a single mouse can do also sucks.

Well there's your problem - your left hand is for moving, not for aiming. ;) Actually I think a common problem with people trying to get the hang of console FPS controls is using your left hand to aim because strafing seems more precise than rotating. If you just pick a game and stick with it, I think you'll get the hang of it. For me it was Bioshock - by the time I finished the game I was proficient. Previously I hadn't played a console FPS since Goldeneye.

Yeah me too. I bought my 360 for Bioshock and hadn't played an FPS on console before. I was fine by the end of it though.

I had (still have) Goldeneye and I never had this problem. I've always used the default setup. Isn't default left moving, right aiming?

N64 only had 1 analog stick heh, and by default I believe it moved you forward, backwards, but the left and right directions turned you.

then the yellowe buttons would strafe sideways and make you look up/down.

Yeah, talk about hard to control. In Goldeneye and Perfect Dark you had to tap the C buttons to look up and down. Forget about being able to make slow and precise aiming movements.

Although you could hold down one of the shoulder buttons and use the analog stick to aim (but then you couldn't move). Good stuff.

eh, only 1 joystick does what your mouse does.

Right, assuming he uses the same WASD+mouse configuration that everyone uses... right stick = mouse, left stick = WASD (or whatever 4 keys you use).

I know a guy who re-maps forward and back to buttons on his mouse, and he barely touches his keyboard at all. He doesn't strafe at all. He gets along alright in single player, but he'd get owned in multiplayer (which he doesn't play).

It's just you. I prefer a controller over a mouse for FPS games.

Geez man it's not that hard. I play FPS's on console's and PC's. It's not that hard to get decent with a controller. Playing through a single player campain will get you used to it in no time.

Its nice being able to play them while lying down though, no carpal tunnel either. See, there's advantages.

My friend has the xim for his ps3 - he got it for like ~$80 on ebay. The thing is so cheap when playing cod4.

There is also the Max Shooter which can be found on eBay for $61 shipped. Problem with the XIM is that you need a PC/laptop right next to your console. Max Shooter, and the XFPS, are standalone. At least thats how I think it works. I havent tried either, but yesterday decided to try out the Max Shooter, so I ordered one from ebay.

Anyways, there are options. Since you can't rent PC games, I'm hoping this works out so I can rent the console FPSes via Gamefly.

Dari, how can you have not played an FPS on the PS3? How many games do you actually own for the PS3?

I do not like controllers for FPS either. I have tried to adjust but it is futile until my attitude changes towards it. I shelved CoD MW, Halo 3 and KZ2 due to having issues with a controller.

Just my preference.

Other than a mental deficiency or a severe physical handicap, what issues could you possibly have?

My friend told me it would take about 15-20 minutes to adjust to a controller for me, but I just have refused to put the time into it (sad, I know). I may soon though as I would really like to play KZ2.

I have played FPS on the computer since the first Rainbow 6. I am accustomed to a KB + M. Anything else just does not feel right to me. I will try the controller again sometime soon.

I use a high sensitivty on a pc also. If I recall correctly I used nearly a 60 for Q3 and for HL DM it was a high number as well. I love quick movements. With a controller I do not seem to get that fast reflex while being able to aim precisely at the same time which I do with a KB + M.
