I'm looking for soem pure traditional Celtic or Irish music. None of this Enya type stuff with synths and other modern instruments.

I'm looking for something with traditional instruments and preferably male vocals. Heck, even acapella (sp?) stuff works. Female vocals are fine too but 90% of the music I have already has female vocals.

I'm also interested in slower or "sad" stuff like ballads. Jigs and reels are okay but I have enough of those.

I have some stuff by Silly Wizard and I really like that. The Dubliners are good too but they tend to do mostly more upbeat stuff.

The Chieftains
The Pogues
The Waterboys
Solas

Dropkick Murphy's if you want some punk flavoring in your irish music.

Edit: Oh, Sinead O'Connor actually has a really nice album of traditional irish music too. Pretty mellow sounding.

I like the upbeat stuff, but check out...

Great Big Sea
Gaelic Storm
They both do jazzed up version of classical Irish tunes as well as some originals

Scythian was good live, but

and if you're into rock/punk versions of Irish music, check out Flogging Molly!

I know it's not really in the vein of what you're looking for, but I've been listening to Dropkick Murphys pretty much on repeat lately. They're a Celtic punk band from Boston, if you're not familiar with them. I saw a trailer for The Departed with "I'm Shipping Up To Boston" on it (which was also in the movie), so I tracked down the album it's on (Warriors Code) and I'm really digging it. I picked up Blackout too based on "Last Letter Home" from Warriors Code. They do modern arrangements of some Irish songs that are really good. There is one song on Warriors Code that's slower ("Green Fields of France"), but the majority of their stuff is very fast and upbeat.

All of Warriors Code is really good, personal favorites are "Captain Kelly's Kitchen", "The Walking Dead", "Sunshine Highway", "The Green Fields of France", "I'm Shipping Up To Boston", "The Auld Triangle" (maybe my favorite song on the CD), "Last Letter Home" and "Tessie".

From Blackout, "Walk Away" "Worker's Song", "Black Velvet Band", "The Dirty Glass", and "Fields of Anthenry" (probably my favorite song of the two albums, awesome bagpipes) are all good. The rest of the CD is good, but those are my highlights.

Like I said, it may not be exactly what you're looking for but I find them very entertaining. At the very least, check out Fields of Anthenry because it's an amazing song.

Well I like the upbeat stuff too but its basically all I have. I've been wanting to listen to some more slow, lament, ballad type stuff lately. I don't know if its just the mood I'm in or what thats what really interests me atm.

I'll check them out because I do like cletic rock type stuff too, like Wolfstone. They're a good band. I also have a cd that has a collection of rock versions of Rocky Road to Dublin, Black and Tans, Raggle Taggle Gypsy, Galway Races, and some others but I lost the actual disc :( . The cd is called Hedge School.

They covered Rocky Road to Dublin, according to their Wikipedia page, they did a live version on their "Live from Boston" CD and it's also on "Sing Loud, Sing Proud".

Old Blind DOgs - New Tricks (others are good too)
Clannad - In Concert (trad), Crann Ull, Dulaman, Magical Ring (trad-rock)
Joemy Wilson - Carolan's Cup, Carolan's Cottage (best versions of Turlough O'Carolan's planxties)
Tannahill Weavers - Capernaum
Frankie Kennedy & Maried ni Mhaonaigh - Altan (after this, they became the band Altan)

Green Linnet records has a bunch more - http://www.greenlinnet.com/

For a bit of rock, you should also check out the Waterboys - Firsherman's Blues and Room to Roam. The title track of "Fisherman's Blues" is a classic bit of Celtic-flavored rock.

Might I ask what kind of stuff do you have already? I'd like some Celtic music. I have two that I like from The Irish Traditional Band - Lord of the Dance and Cry of the Celts.
I mainly like the "cheery" sort of music, with that Irish Whistle. Or if you've heard Erin Shore or Toss the Feathers, they sound quite nice.
I'd mainly be looking for instrumental tracks, perhaps only with vocals, preferably female, serving as background sound.

If you want some folksy Irish music, look for Mary Black. I have a CD of hers, and it has some very good songs on it. I think the Black family is quite prominent in Irish folk music.

Just visit an Irish pub (and I mean in Ireland!). I miss those!
