I live in San Jose, California and I was thinking about organizing a camping trip for myself and a couple of friends. do any of you guys camp? are there any good places to camp in the bay area you would recommend? how's the drive there?

do you like camping in the wilderness or on the beach? My parents camp a lot so they have all the required equipment. it would be the first time i go without them though.

Van Damme or Russian Gulch just south of Fort Bragg and Mendocino. It's freaking blow your mind outrageously beautiful.

You camp in the wilderness, but the beach is a short walk away. Plus you get to drive on Highway 1 and shop in old Mendocino (go to the ice cream shop). Probably a 4 hour trip to get there, but it's a nice drive and way more exotic than stuff in the Bay Area itself.

Place to look for camp sites, as you WILL NEED a reservation is Reserve America

Lots of good spots, all depends on where you want to drive and if the campground has spots available. There are 3-4 campgrounds in Santa Cruz around the beaches but difficult finding an open weekend.

i've camped at Bodega Bay which is just north of SF. It was beautiful, but there's no point in spending more than a night there. Afterwards you could cruise over to one of the near by national forests

ps: it'll be car camping if you go to BB...there's no real hiking to do =/
