Any California Police Officers here?

I'm 21 years old and currently attend CCSF (City College of San Francisco) and am planning to major in a science related field (bio-tech, bio-chem, ect.) maybe even go for engineering. If I stay on my current path, summer of '07 should be my last semester there at which point I will be ready to transfer to a 4-year school. Only problem is I am totally burnt out on school. I can?t stand it anymore; I?m tired of the tedious busy work I need to get out. Once I finish at ccsf and move out of my parent?s house my attitude might change for a little while, then Ill just go back to feeling the same way. I really enjoy science and I?ve always had people tell me that?s what I excel in, and I?m sure if I ever got a degree and a job I?d be happy, but the schooling required to get me there will drive me crazy.

My friend goes to USC and is majoring in Bio-Medical Engineering and feels the exact same way. He has done a lot of research into joining the police department specifically Oakland PD or SFPD and is trying to convince me to join with him. In the back of my science oriented mind I?ve always been interested in law enforcement or becoming a detective or working for the government, but I had always assumed that cops had VERY low salaries. Now my friend is telling me how the starting pay (for the local divisions here anyways) is $65-70k a year and with overtime and the opportunities for advancement the possibility of seeing over six figures. I didn?t believe him at first, but after doing some research and talking to a few people, one of which has a son and brother on the force, I found out he was right. I?m pretty much stuck in a rut and have absolutely no idea what I want to do. The only reason I?m still in school is because I have nothing else to do and I?ve always been told that that is the path I need to take.

My questions:

1. What?s it like being a cop? For those of you who are cops, especially ones in California, what made you want to be a cop?

2. What is the standard advancement like for an officer?

3. What is the typical first posting for a rookie out of the academy? I?ve been told you just get thrown into some of the worst neighborhoods walking the beat.

4. Anything you can tell me about being a cop? Or can anyone give me any ideas that done require any more schooling?

Cliffs:
1. Burnt out on school, need other alternatives.
2. Friend feels same way, wants me to join police department with him.
3. Want info about being a cop; pay, experience, just general info from officers.
4. Pretty much have no idea where I want to go.

What you really should do if you are even remotely interested is go on a ride-along. Ask the cop all of these questions. Otherwise you are gonna get cop-wannabe's that come and give you bs advice etc.

I second DainBramaged -- definitely for a ridealong first. Go on several if you can.

Don't do it just for the money..you'll burn out if your heart isn't in it.

Don't be a cop if you don't love the job. I don't wanna see some half ass patrolling the streets of my city.

What do I have to do to setup a ride along? Just go to a local department and ask someone on duty to set it up?

How is he going to know if he likes it or not until he gets some experience? He is interested inthe idea right now, solid pay, good benefits, and he probably has a mild interest in the work it self. But he won't really know if he like the job until 6 months after he gets it.

Ridealongs will give you a rough idea..much more so than reading about it.

I've rode shifts (or partial shifts) with six officers so far..each ride is different.

This is not some fast food job, it's about life and death of you and the citizens whose lives you're suppose to protect. If he like it or not? WTF is this, some kinda game?

About a year ago the Town of Danville (upper class area 30 miles east of SF) was hiring cops, starting pay was 70k. Very quiet area, very little crime.

I'd like to imagine that the Academy will make or break any potential officers.

Yeah, just call the departments and ask them. Many have programs, but you may have to call several before you find one that does. Insurance is a factor in this.

I am unaware of any departments that do not offer ridealongs. Not saying they don't exist...but to my knowledge, the vast majority do.

I heard even PDs are hiring only those with Bachelors. You might want to confirm that.

but htf is he gonna know what he's in for if he doesnt get some first hand experience. He might decide its too much for him...or maybe he'll dedicate himself to it.

I am willing to bet you don't want to work in the Oakland PD. If you want to be a cop in the Bay Area, check out something like the Alameda PD. ;)

Hm. That sucks. I can definitely understand the liability, though. I could do about whatever I wanted when I rode with Gainesville FL PD...two officers were in a fight with someone..after all was said and done and I mentioned that I didn't know what I should do (just held the light in the guy's face so he couldn't see), one of them said I could've jumped right in if I wanted to...not happening, especially without a vest. On the other hand, I was told that if there was a high priority/dangerous call when I was riding with the PD up here, I'd be dropped off and the officer would go. Fortunately that didn't happen.. :)

So..in short..call around, I guess? :)
