Any boat owners in the forum/

Would like to get a boat for next year. Been doing some reading, but would like to know what some would recommend I look at. I am looking at something over 25 feet to be used in Lake Michigan.

I know boats from 19-25 feet, specifically wakeboarding and jet boats, but it looks like you're looking for something else.

i read somewhere that if your boat is 26' or longer you can officially call it a yacht, buying a 26' yacht is big pimpin, buy a 25' dingy is lame!

Wow, I thought I was going to have information for you... I've got 4 kayaks, a canoe, 4-man raft, 14 foot jon boat with a 4hp and 10hp motor, 18 foot glastron fish/ski combo with a 4.3 volvo 190 hp... But, I know nothing about buying boats in the range that you're looking at.

If it helps, I do know that you can finance boats for a heckuva long time... 15 years is not uncommon. I was looking at one boat, around 45k... absolutely beautiful inside and out. Cuddy cabin with shower, toilet, sink, kitchenette, etc. But, I don't have anyplace to use a boat like that. (Nor did I want to spend that much, especially since it would have entailed purchasing a bigger truck to haul the boat, meaning it really would have cost me close to 90k for something I'd only use 2 months of the year.)

Isn't kinzu right down the road?

Wow. I had just finished looking up boats too. And the first thread that came up in ATOT was about boats. Cool.

I'm looking for a ski/wake boarding boat that isn't going to break the piggy bank. Somewhere from 17-19 feet, less than 3500 lbs, and a price range lower than 20K. Any suggestions?

It's close to an hour away. It's pretty nice down there. I prefer Black Lake though, even though it's 5 1/2 hours away. In fact, after I do some scuba later this week, I'm going to head up to black lake for a week or so and do nothing but fish, fish, fish, fillet a few fish, eat, drink a couple beers, and more fishing.

edit: I've been known to sleep for a few hours here and there, and every few days, I'm usually coaxed into showering and shaving.

Oh, I forgot to mention - if you're not going to do much fishing, the non-fishing packages on the same boat were quite a bit cheaper. The body of the boat is slightly different for the fishing package to accomodate the trolling motor. Plus, it's got the depth/fish finder, live well, integrating tackle system, pedestal seats, etc.

It is often said that the two happiest days in a boater?s life are the day the boat is purchased and the day it is sold.

I love boating but it is a very expensive hobby.

There are some affordable boats... priced around 12-15K...

Hows that trolling motor pull around that glastron? I've always wondered how those ski/fish bowriders do since they are alittle heavier than a bass boat style.

Well, basically i'm looking for good comparison site.

I've browsed some manufactuer sites, but not sure where to really start looking.

Make sure you get a marine surveyor to look at whatever you're buying if you don't know what you're doing. The last thing you want to do is buy a boat with a cracked intake manifold or something and not know it. Good marine mechanics are worth their weight in gold.

Pulls it around just fine for my tastes... I've never had a trolling motor in the past - I always preferred to stand in the bow and quietly paddle into areas. I've long been convinced that the sound of motors turns off the bigger fish from hitting... or to put it another way; fish that are easily spooked by the sound of motors tend to not get caught.

What are you going to use the boat for?

exactly...

most get into too much boat....some not enough (you don't want to be here).

Grady and Sea Ray are like buying a Rolls.

I like Dusky's, don't own a boat yet myself, but I like to get out on them. My father had the one right below 26' and that's his next upgrade (same boat really just more behind the console where you fish).

Personally open fisherman style is the best in my opinion in South Florida. In michigan a walk around may prove ok to escape the elements.

However, it all depends on what you are doing: Skiing, diving, fishing, pleasure boating, smuggling/piracy 😉 har! or just racing.

You do know the definition of a boat, right?

'A hole in the water, into which you pour large sums of money"

i I've owned several boats over the years, and I love it, but they do get very expensive to own. Marine parts can be double, triple, or even worse when compared to the same part made for an automobile. Always something to repair or tweak to make it a bit better. Lots of things to upgrade from what it was when you bought it...and fuel...yeehaw! Think cars suck the fuel...boat propellers are extremely fuel-inefficient methods of propulsion. They work, but they really gobble up the gas...
Still, a nice day on the water is a great thing.
Be sure to take either the Coast Guard Auxiliary's Boating Safety class, or the one by the Power Squadron. Inexpensive way to learn the "proper rules of the road", as well as lots of other good boating safety information...Money well spent.

Don't listen to the naysayers..

I had a 21' center console for nearly 8 years - and did simple maintenance, it was fine.

It did break down twice, once was because the previous owner had an Evinrude prop on the Johnson motor, and the other time was when the steering cable snapped. That was no fun to replace, but it wasn't too expensive overall.

While I'm not an AVID fisherman - I got the center console because it was the most flexible platform I could find.

Good luck, and make sure to take the Coast Guard class as mentioned earlier.
