Any ATL people saddened that 99x is gone? :(

I can remember when they started back in the 90's and have always been a good station IMO.

I'm saddened that they are now gone and replaced by a Top 40 station.

Rock/Alternative is dying 🙁

EDIT:

R.I.P.

It's official as of 5:30AM EST 1-25-2008

The last song they play was Green Day?s - Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)

Not one bit. Once grunge/alternative died it became, in effect, an oldies station. I was way more up set when 96Rock changed formats. Project 9-6-1 FTL.

One thing I did love about 99x was the Rockfest they put on. That was one hell of a show. Darn protesters!

I listened to them during HS...I remember the day they switched over, I was driving to Crew Practice and flipped on the radio and when I heard the mexican I thought it was a joke so put a CD on. Checked back a couple of minutes later, same stuff. I was pissed.

one of my favorite rock stations switched to an easy listening format...had I been a wide receiver in the NFL I would have cried...

Get Sirius.

Howard Stern is all I listen to during the week and if they're doing master tape theater or if I've heard the show I listen to my iPod or one of the hundreds of music stations on satellite radio.

Hmmm... Up here in Northern VA we have DC101 (Exclusively modern rock), Mix107.3 (Lots of Rock/Alternative mixed in), a classic rock station I never listen to, and a modern pop station that sometimes plays a decent song.

It's fine.

It's been dead here since the 1990's. DC 101 is a mere shadow of what it used to be, 107.3 is pablum for the office, and 94.7 is CBS radio crap imitation of classic rock run by consultants.

Sirius Channel 26, Left of Center.

If you are looking for Indie Label/College Radio/Underground, its' just a subscription away. It's better than all but the top 2 or 3 independent radio stations in the counry.

Lived in Atlanta for 15 years and rarely listened to them...or any FM radio station aside from NPR/90.1.

FM Radio in Atlanta just sucked in general. No surprise they're gone.

Still does. The music selection in general sucks and the hosts are annoying.

I either listen to sports talk radio or my MP3 player.

97X ..... BAM The future of rock and roll
97X ..... BAM The future of rock and roll
97X ..... BAM The future of rock and roll

Unfortunately the famous alt/indie radio station from Rainman bit it a few years as well.

Are you serious. I used to come home from Savannah (They only play 60's rock, and nickelback here, it really sucks) just to hear 99x. It's a sad day in my book. They will be missed.

Yep,

Q100 took them over, which is top 40 crap over and over again.

I read in the AJC that Q100's old station 100.5 will become a rock station though, so maybe that'll be half decent.

Your definition of rock/alternative might not be the same as what is currently considered rock/alt. I live near Nashville and we have a syndicated station that fits the bill but I also find myself stuck on the local college station quite a bit as well. The channels are out there you just have to know where to find them... or get sat radio.

maybe it's just me but I don't notice anything different about it. Site seems to be just the same and the playlist is like normal.

If they do go away will be a shame, I enjoy them.

Although they did go through that period with the morning show where they kind of tried to be Howard Stern. Dunno how long that lasted but the new show is a lot cleaner.

Clearchannel's definition of that category is depressingly awful shlock, much like 99% of everything else they play. If they are on a major label and getting any aiplay on any MTV channel, the distinction is a fake one. There's nothing althernative about it. It's just more force fed, heavily processed crap.

The worst part of most of that rot is all the dynamic compression in the recording. Everything sounds like the same loud monotone mess because the current fad in sound engineering is to compress the lows and the highs so that it sounds good on an ipod. A lot of indie labels refuse to do that. Completely washes out the music and homogenizes it even more (wondered if that was possible, apparently it is).

They're gone? I moved from Atlanta a year and a half ago. That's sad to hear.

I remember 99X when it was Power 99 ...

99X was one of the first stations I liked when I moved to Atlanta. They were great until the bastards at Cumulus bought them out and fired the main talent. It was no surprise that their quality dropped and most of the talent that mattered either quit or got fired in the following years.

Still, it's sad to see the end of an era.

Sad but true. Most run through the same tiny playlist over and over and over until you hate every song. Then, to add to your misery, Tom Shane tries to tell you a diamond. Every ten minutes. On EVERY FM station. Fuck that.

<--- has his own show on 91.1FM and plays only ONE promo every hour.

Good riddance. That station was full of unfunny morons.

What about Toucher?

Dekker was funny as well.
