Any AT&T Fiber techs here?

My question is why when we pay for AT&T Fiber 1 Gbps download and upload our speed is only 50 to 100 Mbps upload ? Sometimes the upload takes a while to start too it like stalls or something. Is this normal ?

Download is pretty good though.

It is not really that important but would like to get it fixed.

I know why am I asking a random geek forum.

I'm not a tech but the way it was explained to me, at last with my fibre service (yours may not be the same), is that the ONT does not actually have a laser. It uses a mirror (DLP tech I'm guessing? Has to be fast) to reflect the far end laser back, and that's how it uploads. So there is essentially a time slot for upload and one for download. The upload time slot is shorter. To me it seems like an odd way of doing it though, would be better if it was setup as a full duplex system with a laser at both ends and a transmit fibre and receive fibre.

Basically mien is 50/30, can go up to 250 down but upload is always 30. The actual tech can do up to gig down, but they don't actually offer the service.

When you bypass the att router/gateway with a different router you buy is it possible to mess up the att router/gateway if it doesn't work ? Is there a way to fix it easily if you do ?

Sometimes it's hard to bypass the gateway especially if there is other services like TV. Is it strictly internet? You might be able to sniff out the traffic to see if there's any vlan config. For mine the internet comes in at vlan 35. (completely different ISP Though). So I plugged it straight into my pfsense box and was able to configure vlan 35 on the WAN interface and then set vlan 35 as the actual WAN. When I had TV service I could not get this to work though, I had split off the TV vlan to a separate switch but the TV would work for like 30 seconds then cut off.

You also want to spoof the mac address on your own router to match the one on the ISP provided one.

I miss the simple days when they just gave you a "dumb" modem and you did not have to mess with this stuff.

It won't mess with the at&t router, but you will need to wait a while, until the at&t router ip lease expires. Unplug the at&t router, so it doesn't get another ip address.

Do you bypass att's router/gateway and use your own ?

Yes, I turn off all of the Wifi and the DHCP server. I have it using a static IP and let pFsense do my Level 3 routing.

Note: This is while my wife is watching Netflix and my son is playing games. So that's why the speeds fluctuate.

Thanks right now I just have the default equipment. Worried about messing something up.

Just search for your model number and there are forum post that tell you how to shut everything off. Even if you did mess something up, you can reset the router to default. It's really simple.

Maybe I get about the same with my speed tests as you if not a little better.

What is your normal upload speed to cloud storage something like dropbox or any cloud storage ?

Also what kind of router should I use to bypass the att router/gateway ?

Would a $100 gigabit router be ok or do I need something better?

That's an interesting install. I'm not sure which wires are which in your subfloor. We have a single black fiber cable from the pole outside to my office. I have a 42U rack in my office and that is where it hooks up. I have the same modem and boxes that you have.

To me I am slowly finding out that 1 Gbps connection is not really that with upload at least. I can easily get 100 MB to 116 MB/sec with download though.

The installer had to extend the wires to get the gateway/router to go down into the garage. They weren't long enough. Otherwise he would of had to put it in the attic which would of been too hot obviously.

Can you help me try the bypass of the att gateway/router or is it not worth it with a $100 router ?

Yeah, I have two people using it for streaming and gaming right now. It's usually in the 900Mbps when I test.

I don't know off-hand about my cloud storage speeds. I use OneDrive and Google Drive. I can test those in just a bit and let you know the results.

As far as the router, I mean, that's a bit more of a complicated question. What are you trying to achieve? You're probably better off asking in the network forum. I use a Dell R210 II with pFsense to do my routing, DHCP and VLANs.

Do most people have their equipment in the garage ?

I don't know about most people, but my garage gets way too hot and too cold. I have a 42U rack in my office and I run my entire network through that. As well as my home theater, because it's on the other side of the wall to my office.

Let me see if I can find the link I used. I guess the real question is, why do you want a separate router? You may be better off using the built-in routing, if you don't have a very complex network.

Oh ok. np. Thanks

I just tried downloading two files one from google drive and one from newsgroups plus upload a 5 to 10 gb file to dropbox all at the same time to see if it would buffer YouTube TV.

I am trying to get faster upload speed. Plus from our wireless devices from seeming to stall ever now a then when browsing the internet.

Ok if the heat or cold becomes a issue I guess we can change the placement.

Does the white box in one of my pictures always go in garage ?

Nope, mine is in my office. I guess it may have to do with where the drop is from the pole? Did they ask you where you wanted it? I had mine all planned out and showed them what I wanted, so it was simple.
