I bet a maksutov would be better rated than any schmidt
 
Ignore the weird posts. Some good brands to look at include Meade, Celestron, Hardin Optical and Orion. Here are a couple of really good sites to check out for real telescopes:

Take your time and do a lot of research. Remember you're going to pay a min. of $400 for a beginning level telescope from any maker. Don't even consider buying a telescope from a retail store like Wal-Mart. You will pay extra for Schmidt-Cassegrain designs but they will be smaller and lighter. You may have a local telescope store if you live in a larger metro area. You could also look for local telescope groups that would let your father try out different scopes and see how he really likes it before dropping $400-$4000 on an investment like this.
