Any american's moved to Europe?

A friend and I are talking about moving to Europe indefinately. We are talking about flying into London and just working our way across Europe. We will have ~5-7k saved up each, but if possible, we'd rather get side jobs. We are both fairly young(20's) and aren't ready to settle down just yet. Has anyone ever done this or thought about doing this? Also, what is Europes general outlook on Americans?

Thx,

Billy

I dislike Americans, and I'm from the UK. People on anandtech forums seem OK mostly tho, so you might be welcomed.

Anything in paticular you don't like about them?

I have heard from people who have done that here in Iceland, gone to Europe and just traveling and working their way. Also a friend of mine was thinking about doing that once.
People have mostly been just having fun but some have had major problems when they ran out of money, even my old Danish teacher did that when she was young and she had to contact the Embassy to get back home. But we live and learn 🙂

i'm an american cit. living in England. It sucks. When I finish school i am moving back to do university in america.
I find it to be very dull where i live up north. The rain and darkness just makes things depressing. Everything is expensive and hard to find, (especially computer stuff imo).
there are some good things though. The laws are alot more relaxed here.

Good luck finding a cheap apartment in a nice estate in london lol

ausm, that comment on 'bailing your ass out' is completly wrong

The sorts of comments you're makign are why I dislike Americans. "Look at us, we're so great, without us you'd all be dead"
"We're American, we're so much better than you, you're all jealous of us, bwahahaha" etc. It's the sort of arrogant, pig headed, ignorance of Americans I hate. You people think you rule the world and that everyone else is so much worse than you, and it's THAT which pi**es me off.
I would have no problem with Americans if they weren't so up themselves and all that crap. Plus I like Canada and you're always banging on about Canada sucking and all that crap.
And no, I am not jealous of America and don't want to live there. Canada woul dbe another story though.

If that's the case how about stalking my ex wife in Cheltenham for me?

Just cut a check for ~$500 to have her served with a motion for enforcement, failure to pay child support...

I have never heard anyone ever bash Canada in real life. No offense to Canadians, but your country isn't exactly popular enough to talk about 🙂 Maybe it's something common in the border states. When I started visiting forums on the Internet is when I first noticed people talking bad about Canada.

This ignorant attitude is usually held by stupid spoiled americans who didn't do anything in the world wars.
You will rarely get this from someone who actually served.

Is anyone knowledgeable in English citizenship laws? My grandmother was English, and I have always wondered if they make it easier for descendants to gain citizenship.

You obviously haven't heard about the "One North America" movement, we're set to invade Mexico & Canada when our troops return from the Middle East.

We should be able to take Mexico with a couple of aircraft carriers, some Marines & a few Rangers, Canada's done for, we can take them with the National Guard on a weekend, some pacifist up there will put sugar in their tank's fuel tank, makes it real easy.

Belize, Guatemala, Houduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Cuba, Hati, the Bahamas, and Dominican Republic are next... (in that order😀)

imo you should go with northern europe....ie england, scandinavia, germany, etc. stick to civilized countries because some of the southern ones are really crappy if you don't have a lot of money. stay far far away from eastern europe. i'm sure the countries can be nice, but there is a lot of poverty and you run a large risk of being ropped, cheated and conned. and stay away from france unless you wanna be called an american cheeseburger heh, they're so weird 🙂. almost all northern europeans are very nice towards americans and foreigners, those who aren't are a by far minority.

just be aware that you can't just walk down to a pizza store or some cheesy restaurant around the corner and get a job at min. vage and no tax reports (or however you say it), at least i've never heard of that happening a lot, first of all there aren't too many of such places as there are strict rules about hygeine, standards, taxes, etc. you definitely need to learn the language of the country you want to live in (which is why england would be smart) if you want a job. LOTS of people speak english in scandinavia and germany though, so you're in no trouble at all if you're just on vacation and want to have fun. i'm sure you'll get loads of chicks at clubs etc if you're some handsome american on vacation heh 😛 denmark has a drinking age of 15, go nuts 😉

i'd also advice you to stay in the capital or at least a very large city. areas far away from cities, can be very very dull, this goes for most of europe. boring old people everywhere, no nightlife and *nothing* is open after 6pm. in scandinavia, supermarkets close around 8-9pm, special stores (electronics, clothes, etc.) close at 6pm, and all that's left after that are 7-11's and lots of small drug stores with candy, some canned food, toast, and maybe a bit of milk/butter etc.

i'd say one of the things i dislike the most about scandinavia is the fact that, as said, stores close damn early. second, obtaining.....stuff.....generally is harder. you can't use coupons and buy stuff incredibly cheap on the web, the shipping fees are a bit harsh. but most items can be ordered from an electronics store, of course.

good luck 🙂 more info about denmark here

I am an American, and I lived in London for a little over a year. I loved it. It was brilliant. So many great things to do for fun and the people are really sociable and lovely. The women were super hot. It was the best time of my life.

Most britons I came across had an affinity for the states. I met many who expressed a desire to emigrate, although our immigration laws are really idiotic (priority is given to nationals from latin america, while it is much harder for britons (who share our language and cultural background) to emigrate here. They must be too educated or the wrong skin color I guess.

You will have to work illegally, this is easy to do if you are not picky about the work. In Eastern Europe you can find work as an ESL teacher without much problem. You wont make much but you wont starve. As far as costs go the farther east and south you go the cheaper it is with a few exceptions. I spent the better part of 2001 in Eastern Europe and had not troubles. Another thing you can do is work in a hostel, you usually will just get a free place to stay but sometimes more. If you have any questions feel free to ask.

Thank you for all the advice and tips... I'm looking into the Visa right now. Anybody have any experience in southern france, italy or greece?

What are you talking about ?

It is much easier for a european to get a permanent resident or green card than any latin american...or asian or african

The hardest is for chinese and south asians.

Before you bring in skin color and race into this, please check the bloody facts straight up ...
