The colonial period of American History, especially the American Revolution have always been my favorite topics of study as long as I could read. Even with video games Liberty or Death is still my favorite of all time. Just the fact that this group of people came together to found this nation from scratch based on these ideals pulled together from so many philosophies and were able to hold this diverse group of colonies together fascinates me, as did the day to day life of those living at the time.

So I've read a great deal on the topic but somehow missed this book:

The Glorious Cause from the Oxford History of The United States, and also this book: Guide to the Battles of the American Revolution. Has anyone read either of these books? I'm tempted to order them from Amazon tonight..

may need to pick some of these up.

just read bernard cornwell's redcoat, a fictional account of some of the battles around philadelphia and the winter occupation there. not the killer angels by any stretch but a decent book.

Those sound great! I am a huge history buff but don't have enough time to get into reading about it...I'm lucky if I have time to sneak in a documentary a couple times a month :(

Get them and let us know how they are. And if either one has short enough chapters to be bathroom material :D

Cool. I was an American History minor and loved the Revolutionary Era.

I'm an American citizen and my Grandmother on my Dad's side of the family is a DAR.

My ancestors also owned slaves...:(

Idk if this new or not, but I saw in Barnes and Nobles that Michael Crichton has a book (posthumously??) published about Pirates--considering they were in the same region of colonial America/British territories, I thought you'd be interested in checking it out.

I am relatively new to this country, but I have a friend whose ancestors came over on the Mayflower, and another who owned Breeds Hill (the Battle of Bunker Hill).

You know why that is?

One major reason: Crichton challenged the ecoNazis calling them as bigoted as the Christian fundamentalists most of them professed to deplore.

The left has their boot on the neck of Hollywood and so ignored him or anything about him.

Did you read 1776 yet??

Will change how you view Washington.

That's on my list as well. I also am ordering a book about James Madison 'The Last Founding Father'. I never ready much on him, so I look forward to it.

He was an author (what's that?) who died of natural causes and it was widely reported everywhere. But no sex scandal, no drugs, thus no story for the short attention span Enquirer devouring US public.

1776 is excellent.

I just visited Monticello the other day. I'm a big admirer of Jefferson, so I thought it was really interesting. Madison and Monroe had houses down that way too, I'd like to see them sometime as well when I have time.

PBS had a pretty good series called Rebels and Redcoats on air last year: http://www.pbs.org/previews/rebels_redcoats/

Presented from perspective of a British military historian.

A little dry and tedious at times, but interesting nonetheless.

May be worth watching if you can borrow it for free at your local public library.
