I looked at USPS, UPS, and Fedex already but they don't really ship large boxes. I'm looking for a somewhat cheap options. My girlfriend is leaving Ann Arbor to do her PhD at Duke and I'll be helping her move from Ann Arbor to Durham. We plan on flying from here to Durham so I can only check in so much at the airport.

Are there any freight moving companies that are affordable?

How big is big?

Look on UPS and Fedex. They have the limit posted. Measure your boxes!!

Then if too big to ship ground ( must be some really big crap ) then use Fedex Freight. Thats how I just had a 60" dlp tv shipped. Cost me $95.

edit: oops, just read your post. I thought you'd lost a bet or something and had to pay up. Then I see its the wrong part of Michigan too.

if you are shipping books, use the media shipping by USPS. it is dirt cheap. 20lbs for about $20

i'm going to be helping her move in the summer and don't really have the time to drive down there. i'll be interning most of the summer so this has to be a weekend trip or two weekends at most.

she has so many books, clothing, cooking stuff etc. :(

You are only talking about an easy 1 day drive.

Compare that to how long will it take to fly from door-to-door?

Take a vehicle with a tow-hitch, get a U-Haul trailer, dolly, load and go.
Driving will average 60+ mph.

Or rent a cargo van depending on the amount of volume needed to transport.

If you want to check out frieght companies, use the yellow pages to find frieght forwarders.

this looks like a mighty good opportunity to share the cost of a trailer, right here... and maybe make some friends to share travel with back and forth for visiting..
