Any advice on a good mouse for a new comp?

I love the one I have now (generic Microsoft/HP mouse), but I think I'm going to have to leave that here at my parents house when I go to college in a few months. :(

I'm going to build a new comp (I've had my parts list for about 3 months now), and I'm gearing up to buy, but I STILL don't have a nice, smooth mouse in mind. So any advice on some that maybe I can try out at the local Staples or something would be more than welcome.

:D Sorry, I should have told you I'm not looking for any optical crap. ;) If you've ever used one, they skip HEAVILY when you make fast movements like you do in games. And let's just say I'm not buying this PC for its word processing capabilities...

I would highly suggest a Logitech mouse, they're affordable, high quality and have good driver support.

Before buying from Staples.com you may want to check your local Office Depot's clearance section. Several people have found good Kensington and Logitech USB wheel mice for $4.88.

my microsoft optical mouse has no problems skipping in game play, it must be those generic optical mouse problems..

You have to make some seriously quick movements with your mouse in games if it was a good optical mouse and it's jerky.. or you have the sensitivity set seriously low. Optical mice kick butt in FPS games! I've never had a problem with this Microsoft Intellimouse Optical and I'm always making quick checks behind me, etc in Q3.

i suggest logitech 3 button mouse. i dont know but try the newer optical mouse, they dont skip as much. well it never skipped for me (^_^) so try it cause u dont have to clean it and its more accurate. GL

I have the Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer and I will never buy another mouse again. It is the best mous3e I have ever used. It has no skipping problems and I find it to be just as accurate as any mouse except for those Erazor Boomslang mice that are impossible to use.

Hehe..if you really don't want to go optical, I'd recommend the Razer BOOMSLANG! Now that's a mouse, baby! It's used for a lot of FPS, and recognized because of its high usage in Quake. You can find more information at the manufacturer's website. It comes in the 1000 and 2000 version. The number is related to the dpi sensitivity. Thus the 2000 is more sensitive then the 1000.

Hey EpsiIon,

The optical mouse you tried was a PS/2 version wasn't it? I got the same thing when I used the PS/2 adapter but soon as I switched to USB the problem went away. Both MS and Logitech's offerings in optical are excellent!!!(Yes I have both!)

I have to say I was biased against Optical for a long time as well.

The first generation Microsoft Optical wasn't very good for gaming. So I stuck with my Intellimouse w/ball and ps2rate at 200 for a long time.

I think what convinced me was when Thresh of Firingsquad started to recommend Optical after Microsoft came out with their second generation. Hell, if Thresh thinks it's good for FPS then you and I certainly aren't going to complain!

Now I use the Logitech optical attached to USB. USB is a 100 refresh rate so it's smooth and I have never been happier. Team arena is smooth as silk and I never have to stop playing to clean the freakin ball anymore! Plus I junked my Everglide mousepad and now I just slide across the table when I play Team Arena. Go for either the Microsoft Optical or Logitech, depending on which feels better in your hand.

Oh and if you use the Logitech stick with Intellimouse software which you can download from Microsofts site. I liked the webwheel software which came with the Logitech but it screws up in fps games no matter how many patches Logitech comes out with. Logitech Optical with Intellimouse software is perfect.

I would highly recommend the microsoft intellimouse explorer. I picked mine up for $40 using various rebates a while back. It performs flawlessly. If your sensitivity wasnt so low you wouldnt have to move the mouse very fast, and you can always bind one of the 5 keys to change your sensitivity in game :) Also the counter in my dorm didnt provide very good tracking, it is kinda glossy, so I went out and bought a Belkin mousepad with the Gel wrist thing mounted on it, and it works great :) Personally I think the optical mice are hot deals

Another reason why your mouse might have been jerky or skipping is that you need it on a NON-reflective surface. So if you put your mouse on glass, a mirror, or white paper, it will skip like crazy, however, on a black or dark mousepad, it's perfectly smooth.
