Any advice for a pre-interview social event with an accounting firm?

I'm scared, a little, but I'm very good at starting and holding good conversations, so I figure this'll be a great chance to meet some interesting people and maybe even impress a few enough to remember my name.

Any tips for conversation material, any major dos and don'ts?

:) I know that much. Any others? I know some of them... always hold my drink in my left hand so that I can shake hands with my right, when I get business cards, make sure I note any important details about the person on the back (after they've left).

:p It's from 6PM to 7:30. I'll be home in time to finish some extra homework and do more research before my 10:30AM interview tomorrow.

Get drunk and hit on your would be boss's wife. You might not get the job, but it's luck either way I figure... :)

Bring a really cool calculator!

:p You know us accountants, always crunching those numbers.

Or bring an abacus as a discussion piece. ;)

Good idea. Maybe a copy of the recent "Accountants of Passion" pinup calendar. :p

Seriously, it's all pretty much like any social function. Don't spend too much time talking about yourself, but make sure they know your name. Just listen, and respond to the conversation and don't give opinions about topics you don't fully understand.

Just look interested, drop your name, and listen attentively.

:) Thanks! That's pretty much what I was planning on doing. It will be interesting to see how the other 30 or so tax candidates handle themselves.

I work at a Big 4-Firm. Almost 5yrs now....

Social events do absolutely nothing to get you hired but can do a lot to not get your hired.

The majority of people you will meet most likely just started with the firm 3-6-months ago. They have very little to do with gettign you hired.

The Managers & Partners you meet want to ensure you speak appropriately and can interact in a social/group situations. Lots of group work in Public Accounting.

Do not drink! Have a Coke, avoid the beer. Leave the beer for the employees.

Business cards, who freakin cares. None of these people will ever speak to you again unless you happen to interview with them tomorrow. We submit our reports to Recruiting on how you performed the same day! So folllow up emails don't help.

Don't talk about college life, frat parties, drunken brawls at the Football game. Do talk about "How has your experience been at the firm" "what kind of clients do you work on" "have you traveled anywhere interesting" "Have you worked on any M&A activity" "How is SOX 404 going along with the accelerated 10K filing date"

If you are interviewing with a Local/Regional small firm. Well my advice blows then

I'm open to PM's

*EDIT*
Just read your planning on going into TAX. Most of my questions above have nothing to do with TAX but they may actually care you realize those things exist within the firm.

Tax blows! Auditor by trade

Fmr12B - Thanks a bunch for your advice. I'm just about to shower and head over there, it's pretty short, like you said, I figure it's a good chance to speak to some associates. I'm not planning on drinking and I think I'm a halfway decent conversationalist, so I guess I'll see how it goes. I have another on Thursday for E&Y.
