Any Advantage to new E4 Venice v. Old E3?

I'm building a new rig and will put either a 3000+ or a 3200+ in it. I'm wondering if I should try to use one of the new E4 3200+ Venice's or if it doesnt make any difference for me. I do not plan to overclock or anything like that, but have any other improvements been made? THanks, Rob

Do you mean E6? or is E4 some stepping im not aware of?

I thought E4 was opterons.

E6 as a rule doesnt overclock quite as high as the older E3s.

Im not sure. The article on anandtech says they are phasing out E3's and phasing in new E4 venices.

E4 is the new venice based on san diego/optie memory controller (much improved)

nobody knows how they OC yet because nobody has them

E6 weren't very good, E4 could be worse since it's probably going to be binned tighter

Or the E4 could be a great clocker because it uses the same core as the opterons, no way to tell till they hit the street.

err... i thought the E4's were based on the dualcore design except one core was disabled. maybe i'm getting the wrong info.. :/

Will the newer memory controller make any difference for an ordinary user to justify trying to get the new revision or for an ordinary user does it not matter?

Cracking down on OC'ers then nobody will buy AMD anymore.
E3 is better than new E4? I hope so!

That would be funny! Imagine AMD cracking down on overclocking, resulting in the enthusiast community migrating over to Intel.

Eh, Intel would have to demonstrate some competition with AMD first, and at the moment they're just sort of telling us: "Seriously, it's coming... we promise." I miss the days of the Northwood. :(

I think the E4 will probably be better OCers if anything. Better RAM controller probably allows for more stable OCing in any case provided they don't alter much anything else from E3.

According to some folks at XS, the E4 is not the same core as the Opteron core and the overclocks that people are getting are not stellar, at all.

Just checked out the XS AMD forums. A lot of the posts are difficult to understand, Im guessing many of them are children that learned english as a second language? Anyway, they seem to think that the Venice E4's are defective daul core cpu's with the bad core disabled. I'm not sure I buy that. I'd sure like to see AT do an in depth look at the E4's.

Just ordered the 3500 with this new core and an Abit KN8 SLI for my cousin (off the egg).

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813127225

Going to build it with him next Sunday.

Any recomended CPU Coolers? I just want to get him a nice stable 10% overclock. I'm looking to stay under $50 before shipping (Cooler will be my christmas gift for him).

I was looking at getting a ZALMAN as I've always heard great things about them for many years. But of course there are quite a few ZALMANs out there.

ZALMAN CNPS7000B-Cu LED 2 Ball Blue LED

ZALMAN CNPS7700-CU 120mm 2 Ball Cooling Fan with Copper/Alum
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16835118114

This one that much nicer?
ZALMAN CNPS9500 LED 92mm 2 Ball Blue LED
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16835118223
It looks nice and the Blue LEDs are a plus (he's a blue LED freek) but I was thinking down blowing ZALMANs might cool the passive northbridge better.

(I'll be ordering from the Egg or ZZF as i've got other things I will be ordering from both soon.)

Thanks.

They are at least defective BN's which is a Sandiego core since they have same part number as SD and same core size..I would'nt speculate on them being defective dually's until someone pulls a top and measures core size.. It's certainly possible for the "CG" variants.

As they seem to be SD core chips then we shouldn't need any BIOS updates to run them right?

It seems they may overclock OK, i saw a thread on another forum (sry don't have link) of a guy with his E4 3200 stable at 2.7GHz with 1.55V on air.

Thanks for the post! I've actually been reading a few reviews from your post in the cooling forum. Right now, I think I'm going to snag the ZALMAN 9500 from ZZF @ $60 shipped. Looks pretty good for the full package (Fan/Grease/Heat sink). Plus as a gift I'm sure he'll enjoy the blue LEDs. Going to end up a tad over my $50 mark, but after all the reviews you linked it's clear that a heat pipe based cooler will be best.

Considering I already had a bias toward trying a ZALMAN, I'm not terribly surprised.

Also, I can't seem to find those prices that low on the Thermalright or Scythe coolers at Newegg or ZZF.
