After doing some reading, it appears that Cree, Inuktitut and Ojibwe are the three most commonly spoken native languages (in Canada).

I will likely be spending the next 2-4 years in northern Canada, so Inuktitut seems like a good choice.

How similar are the languages? If I were to learn Cree, would I have much difficulty picking up the other languages? or are they quite different?
 
Only Metis myself, never had an opportunity to learn Wendat; I would probably talk to your local band to see what classes they have to offer.
As for being useful, yeah if you're going to be living in Nunavut for an extended period of time it wouldn't hurt... however, I doubt anyone under 60 won't be able to speak English better than Inuktitut.
 
The differences between the languages is pretty significant. I don't know why, maybe cuz the tribes were very seperate and had no knowledge of another existing language when their's was formed? And they all have multiple dialects too. It's confusing to listen to the differences, the words aren't even close.
Like European languages I guess?

You'd be fine with English though.
