Any 5.1 speakers with onboard Dolby Decoder for less than $200US ($300canadian)?

I found the Yamaha TSS-1s for $314cdn (~$200US) they are 5.1 with onboard Dolby digital (and DTS for that matter) decoding.

Anyone know of any other speakers in that price range with dolby digital decoding? 4.1 with a virtual center would be ok as long as it has dolby decoding.

The DTT2500's are under $200 and have DD5.1. Altec Lansing has the ADA880/880R/885 which are 4.1 and I believe do the virtual center mixing with Prologic. I think you can find one for under $150.

Yellow: Coincidentally I just purchased a set of the Altec ADA880R's over here for $111.95 and about $15 shipping from Texas to Michigan.

Yes they do "do" center channel "virtualization" so it's not TRUE Dolby Digital but for the price they are excellent speakers.... no Klipsch or Videologic Scirroco (that spelling doesn't look right, lol) killers but very nice just the same.

Oh yeah I forgot about the DTT2500, selective memory...

I think I can fart and burp out more bass than that thing's sub can produce. I won't buy those...I'd like to try out the 3500s thought they are quite a bit more than $300cdn, but the 2500s are out....

The ADA880s eh...I've looked at the 885s but never the 880s...

Any other suggestions?

The 885's aren't good speakers by any means, and the 880's were even worse in comparison. If you want to look at speakers more than $300 cdn (which you said you would look at the 3500's) then you should also check out the BA7500's. They sound pretty nice, just not quite as nice as the 4800's but do offer the DD functionality you require.

DM: No actually I'm not really interested in spending much more than $200US/$300cdn...for $299+tax I can get the BA4800 locally, or I can order the TSS-1s for $314+shipping+tax...I just have to decide how badly I want a Dolby Digital Decoder....

Go for the better speakers in the 4800's. If you really want dolby digital, there aren't any multimedia speakers which can handle the dynamics of dolby digital. You'll have to buy yourself a home theatre setup.

Yeah that's what I've been thinking...

Right now I live in one room becuase I'm still a university student..but 2-3 years from now I probably won't be playing any DVDs on my computer. I think that I'll just get WinDVD2000 and use 4 channel downmix...

The only downside there is that I can't use 4 channel downmix and use the TV-output on my Hollywood plus...oh well I hardly ever use TV-out anyways, and if I do I'll survive with stereo...I won't be in the &quot;sweet spot&quot; anyways when I'm watching on TV.

I think I'll get the BA4800 and give up on Dolby Digital Decoding on the PC.

Divine: Thanks for &quot;trashing&quot; the ADA-880's that I mentioned (and use with one of my rigs).

The whole PC-audio experience is such a &quot;pain&quot; since you need to be sitting in front of that &quot;rig&quot; that &quot;adequate&quot; PC audio suffices for me.

As an audiophile, in my home theatre and professional rigs I use some high-end components manufactured by companies most people have never even &quot;heard of&quot;.

CompUSA has a set of 5 speakers + sub + external Dolby Digital Decoder for around $100 (US)... You will need a dolby digital output from your sound card or hardware decoder... The creative labs and hollywood decoder cards have it.. and the sound blaster 5.1 sound cards have it also.. I think you can find that creative labs hardware decoder card for under $30..
