It's the same thing isn't it?
Well, I thought a fear would keep you from going out in public, but if you were just anxious you would go but be a little nervous.

I thought they were two seperate things.

He hit it. Technically, agoraphobia is "fear of open spaces" BUT for a long time now, it's been used to describe fear of going out in public.

You don't have that do you, Geekbabe? You don't strike me as that type of person.

When I was working for Comcast, I talked to this guy who said his wife was so agoraphobic that whenever someone had to open the front door, she'd run to her bedroom and close the door and hide. :Q

Their internet connection was the wife's "lifeline" to friends and family and was the only thing that kept her sane. :Q

They lost their internet connection, hense the phone call from the husband, and his wife ended up needing a call to paramedics to come sedate her because her husband couldn't get it working and couldn't get through to someone in, like, 10 minutes.

That was easily the worst call I'd ever taken.

It's not the same thing. You can have anxiety about going out in public but still nmanage to do it where as Agoraphobia is a paralyzing fear that imprisons people within their own homes because they can't function out in public.

I'm talking more about people who can go outside to conduct important business like going to work, running errands but who over time find their rising anxiety level makes it increasingly difficult to be in social situations so they gradually begin to avoid them whenever possible.

That sounds more like what furie27 said - social anxiety disorder. It's not the fear of going out, it's the fear of social interaction - dating, parties, eating in public, talking on the phone.

social anxiety, its different then agroraphobia I believe, but tell "whoever" is having these issues to go to a doctor, we are just a bunch of people on the internet, not doctors. The doctor will diagnose it and find a method to help, medicated or therepy
