Any recommendations for free Antivirus besides Microsoft's security essentials? I had my mom on AVG free but it has gone downhill. Anything else out there that is free but decent?

You get what you pay for. Have used avast, MS's SE, avg. Educate Mom on what not to do on the net.

Virus Scanning is pretty much a basic feature these days. Malware scanning is what really needs attention. I haven't found an actively scanning product yet that is worth while, free or otherwise.

Avira and MSE are my 2 choices. I use Avira. I like Avast also, but never saw a need to switch to it from Avira. I use MSE on mom type computers. Less stuff happens to confuse.

MSE, imo, is the best of the Free ones. There's no pay version that the software is going to try to get you to buy, for now anyway. It's also decent anti virus/anti malware.
