I'm getting alerts that I'm infected, need to buy a copy, all the usual stuff.

I found an av.exe and killed it, but how do I get rid of this permanently? I'm scanning with AVG free, but if it didn't keep the thing from getting in I doubt it will get it out.

I'd like to post a hijackthis log, and I'd like to install malwarebytes and some other programs I've just found, but whenever I try to install something like that the av.exe starts up again and the popups start again. System restore doesn't work either.

Google has led me here, but I've never heard of this site and don't want to screw this up further.

edit: I've gotten rid of it, now I'd just like to know how it got installed in the first place.

it makes it so that if you launch any executable it instead launches Antivirus Vista 2010, Win 7 Antispyware 2010, or XP Internet Security 2010. If the original program that you wanted to launch is deemed safe by the rogue, it will then launch it as well.

God damn it, they spell this out in their article, and their solution at the bottom is to download and install malwarebytes. Guess what happens when I try to install it?

You can try Rkill which is made by one of those who write guides I believe. http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/rkill.exe stops many known malware processes from preventing start of Malwarebytes and other tools.

Possible infection is now at version 5.45 where Rkill is needed, if not the exe-fix thingy take care of it. Malware writers can also read and perhaps they forgot to update. But just post at their forum, they have a whole section dedicated for malware removal.

Good you did not jump at Google hits. Malware SEO is popular and click, click can lead to questionable sites like the one you link to. Their reason for being online is at best affiliate deals with companies who could not care less, like PC Tools...

Come to think of it, regarding marketing difference to the "good" guide is not exactly huge but try both and see which you like the best ;) You don't get much for free or without ads on internet is all there is to say. "ID" referrals are here to stay.
