Panda software compared to NAV, big difference you dont even notice is there. But it is so quiet in the background i dont really know if its really doing anything.

I was running Avast on a P4 2.4 @ 3.06 & it did ok. Then I got an A64 3200+ setup & installed KAV & my system suffers occasional lockups & appears sluggish compared to my old setup. I don't know if it's the hardware, the new AV or a combination of the 2.

On a related note, there does not seem to be a clear winner from this thread at all. It seems people are having drastically different experiences with all the products.

AVG it is for me; you cannot beat free. As long as your smart about things, any virus scanner that is reguarly updated will do fine, imho.

Bingo!

I'm looking for the AV that has the least negative effect on system performance. The review sites all talk about detection rates and updates, which of course makes sense, but they seldom do performance comparisons. Is there a place that compares the performance impact of all the good AV programs?

Wow, the Panda online scan is very thorough and it found a trojan on my PC that I thought I had removed a while back!

Wow... Panda online scan found 9 new viruses that AVG and TrendMicro didn't catch. Oddly enough, one of the viruses (Java exploit: ByteVerify) has been found by both scanners before, but Panda detected 6 (!) more instances of it in the java application data. It also found IRC.Sdbot.Drp in Mozilla's application data (interesting since I've never used IRC), Classloader.B in sun java application data, and Downloader.CL in the same location. Fortunately my security settings (hardware and software firewalls, plus service tweaks and security policy edits) are locked down tighter than they should be, so they probably didn't cause much (if any) damage. I'm totally adding this scanner to my schedule.

My virus/spyware/adware schedule:

Nightly update/run of AVG6 (scheduled at 4am)
Weekly update/scan of Adaware/Spybot
Bi-weekly scan using Trendmicro's Housecall (and now Panda's online scan, too)

I've found that I prefer AVG over most others... It's easy to understand, and relatively non-intrusive.

Another one I like is BitDefenders LiveCD, but while I have no problems scanning FAT16 and FAT32 drives, I've never gotten NTFS to work. I think that's just a problem with the version of Knoppix it's based on.

I don't like Norton or Mcafee. bloatware aside, they created havoc in using Windows and many other programs.

I've had some experience with Panda... but for right now, AVG is the primary tool I use.

Also I've found that AVG and Bitdefender work in Windows Safe mode... everytime I try to use Panda in safe mode, it errors. Just another note.

I have found AVG 6.0 Free Edition to an excellent AV product also. It is easy to schedule scans but only once a day or not at all. They update their virus definitions about every two days and their servers are more reliable now than in the past. I use it on a number of my clients' computers and AVG has worked flawlessly without ever being attacked and/or disabled- unlike Norton AV. I also like the fact that it takes up minimal resources and that it can scan in safe mode (as mentioned in the previous post). The only caution is that it doesn't seem to pick up java byte verifyer viruses which are stored in java's cache. This can be prevented by disabling caching under the java plug-in (control panel). When completing online scans (trend micro and panda), trend found two byte verifyer viruses where panda found only one. I have tried some of the other AV products but AVG's simple interface, functionality and cost make it hard to beat.

Currently using AVG with:
Spybot?s IE blacklist and resident system scanner (TeaTimer)
Ad-aware
Spyware Blaster
FireFox Browser
Scheduled Updates & Scans
All equaling piece of mind.

Question about Panda... does the email protection work with Thunderbird? I actually only use outlook for the calendar, not e-mail, any way to disable it for outlook?
