I have the latest version of avast! free antivirus.

Lately it's been making my computer stutter. In steam games the screen stutters every 5 minutes or so, and I can see a major shift in video quality.

The moment I disable the antivirus, everything runs fine.

the problem has gotten progressively worse. My computer slows down when I'm simply browsing the internet, reading the news, whatever. My task manager performance is at 90-100% when my antivirus is on, 5-8% when it is off.

So wtf is this?

Get a new antivirus?

My guess is that you have either malware or some false positive file Avast is having big problems with. And basically going into doing semi forever loops that is causing your slow downs.

You could trying scanning your computer with something like malwarebytes and taking some on line virus scans, and failing that run the full security resource thread diagnostics.

But if you can't find the cause, try another AV, and I would recommend Avira personal. And see if the problem goes away.
