Antivirus confusion, need help!

Hi all,

I'm currently looking for a good anti virus program that won't use up too much of my system resources when they are active. I've been using Antivir for quite a while now, but users just keep clicking the "cancel" update button whenever it tries to update, so I also need the AV to be fairly silent, at least until they found something wrong. Oh, and that pop-up after update, urgh, so annoying. I kinda liked AVG, used it for about 1 year before Antivir, but it mistakenly scanned one of the anti-hack program (nProtect) for online games in my PCs as malware, so I kinda have to change. I don't know if they still do that, haven't really tried it again.

Oh, right, it would also be great if it were free of charge. 😀

P.S: By the way, I read in many, many forums that people are having a fairly bad experience with norton's products. Is that true, or are they just exagerrating?

Norton products are crap and I've used them before. Way too bloated now.

Norton products are crap and I've used them before. Way too bloated now.

While the 04 and 05 products certainly live up to the reputation, each version since has been smaller and leaner (and faster). The 09 versions are stacking up to be the smallest most light weight av products from ANY vendor, I suggest you take another look.

Interesting, so they've taken steps in the right direction in fixing that problem. Have you used 09 personally yet?

In addition to that, go into the scheduler and set the update display mode to "invisible" You'll never know it's updating if you disabled the popup.

NOD32 was probably the lightest (resource wise) antivirus program I've ever used.

It worked great, but when I moved to Vista I picked up a free after rebate copy of Kaspersky.

Both I like, but Kaspersky typically scores better in detection rates.

PCTools has a free antivirus that's pretty good. http://www.pctools.com/free-antivirus/
