I have an old P3 800 overclocked to just over 1Ghz, and running a Voodoo 3 3500 that I still use to play Descent:Freespace and Freespace2.

That would of been in software rendering mode then?;)

Btw 133 didn't have MMX ,the 166 was the slowest you could get with MMX :)

Thanks for the link , is Descent 3 any good?

It's fantastic. :) It came out seven years ago but I don't think there has been any other game of that type since then. You can probably get it for a few dollars off ebay.

Funny you mention that :D Descent 3

I just hope the full version doesn't have the sluggish controls the demo did.
It's a shame their are no modern versions of this genre :(

I don't think you'll be disappointed. :) I'm not sure about the sluggish turning issue, although they did increase the basic turning speed from D2 to D3.

By the way, we'll probably resume our multiplayer games at the other forum in a week or so, once everyone's college semesters are over, and we could always use more players, so drop me a PM if you get any of these games and are interested.

The first game that showed me the beauty of the 3D Accelerator was 'Wing Commander V' What a beautiful game that turned out to be when glide was chosen... I could see explosion particles, shock waves, smooth frame rates. It was a beautiful site to behold.

The second game I seen was Quake II. Looked wonderful. It completely changed the game for me!

Another one was Nuclear Strike, I remember that fondly...

Ahhhhhh, good memories.

I think the earliest 3D stuff I played was maybe the first Kyle Katarn game, think it was JK: Dark Forces. Could be that it didn't support 3D, maybe it was the second part then but I'm pretty sure I've bought a Voodoo only for that game :)

that was based on the quake 1 engine, which did not require a 3d accelerator. I remember back when I first got my hands on the quake 1 beta, playing it in software mode. Man, that takes me back.

I'm using a GeForce4 Ti4200 card to power my arcade cabinet. It's being output to a 27" TV. Pac-Man still rocks!

My girlfriend's old Dell 733mhz had one. I think it was a 16MB card (maybe 32?). But, it never saw anything more demanding then Bejeweled.

I have tried many things to get the Mechwarrior 2 franchise to run in 2k/xp. As far as I can tell, it is an issue of the game making direct calls to VXD driver functions in the OS.

Since 2k/xp are 32bit NT unlike the 32bit/16bit hybrid of 9x, there are no VXD drivers, just WMD.

I can't even get Mechwarrior 2 to run under cedega or wine in *nix :(

I've had similar issues running Homeworld in XP. Then again, Homeworld 2 crashed on me on the second to last level on the install that I have. I've tried a few different builds, I suspect it's just a bad copy :-(
