Antioxidants and Detox

It takes 2 seconds to read about antioxidants on wikipedia, it will give you a more thorough definition of what it does. To summarize, it simply means it slows down your body from killing itself, aka aging.

You can buy detox bundles from whole foods and health food stores.

There's no such thing as a detox "workout." Even detox diets DO NOT work. There is no research supporting any of them. If you're looking to detox, drink plenty of water and eat tons of fruits/veggies in addition to an overall healthy diet. There is no magic pill or short-term diet that magically makes your body healthier.

Antioxidants are chemicals required by the body to keep the body running properly. When the body burns energy, the reactions in the process produce things called free radicals. These free radicals are very reactive, and have the potential to cause cancer, as well as other types of damage to the body - for example, it's suggested that free radicals cause the damage that eventually leads to ageing. The purpose of an antioxidant is to mop up these free radicals so they don't cause any damage.

The idea behind people recommending you take antioxidants is that some of it is good, therefore more must be better. However, this isn't really the case, and in some cases, more can be worse (e.g. Vitamin E).

As for detox, it's a similarly misguided idea that the body requires constant vigilance and maintenance to keep it working properly. The theory is that the body builds up 'toxins' that require some kind of activity to remove - colonic irrigations and bizarre enemas, strange diets, and in your case, equally strange exercises. The fact is, that nobody has identified any of these 'toxins', nobody has shown that they harm the body, and nobody has shown that enemas, diets, and yoga exercise helps remove these toxins from the body.

Yeah, it doesn't work.

Detox and cleanse diets can be dangerous. There have been many threads on here about them. The user frequently ends up with allergies or sensitivities that they didn't have before.

SC has the right of it. Water and fiber are all the "detox" the body needs. It knows how to keep itself clean. Don't believe the myth of eating BBQ or grilled food all summer coating your arteries with resin and crud.

Try a smoothie with kale in it, leave some books or magazines in the bathroom, and clear your calendar for a couple of days.

I second the kale smoothie. Add some milk, banana, kale, and berries and you have a delicious smoothie full of antioxidants.
