Anti Virus Software

Does anyone remember how virus software definitions were updated before the modern age of the internet? I'm doing a presentation, I remember in class using Windows 3.1 with old DOS AV software, and it had a definition update area where you'd enter a sting of code. I think it'd be interesting to include this in my presentation I just cannot find any examples of this.

As far as i remember, there weren't any incremental updates early on, you just installed the newer version of norton utilities or whatever.

So far I went into history, intro to anti-virus, common used software, types of viruses.. any idea what else to include to make it interesting?

The goal of virus writers... In years past, they were written just to do it, and many times if you had a sense of humor, you could laugh at the viruses; they were funny/non destructive. Others were written for malicious purposes, but the goal was electronic vandalism. Destroying data just to do it. Now it's more of a commercial activity, and the goal is to make money. It's a professional endeavor, with big money backing it up, with the intent of making big money in return.
