I have Norton Internet Security running in the background all the time. Presumably its keeping my computer safe from malicious instructions. The problem is that I'm trying record audio and I think that this application maybe interfering with the process. Are there any problems associated with shutting this program down for a day? Note: I'm on a small network and connected to the internet.

Norton is notorious for interfering with things. Just turn it off. Better yet, find better AV software.

I can disable Norton Internet Security, but there does not appear to be a simple way of toggling it on/off. Am I looking in the wrong right place, or do I need to uninstall it?

Yea def turn it off. My mom's computer did that and wow did it slow up because of it. To open up a word document took mins! Once I turned it off it ran smoothly. I just totally disabled it and then ran checks a few times a week.

Uninstall, install Anti-Vir.

Anti-Vir caused some problems with Firefox running websites with javascripts. I had to disable anti-vir when I need javascripts it works just fine.

Norton can never really be turned off...it always leaves something or other running in teh background.

Remove.

Install AntiVir or AVG instead.

Personally, i see no need to have antivirus protection running realtime unless you share a computer with morons, or are surfing dangerous websites.

As long as you have a router or a software firewall running, you'll be fine unless you have the aforementioned situation.

Heh, Norton's saved my butt a few times because of this. I've been using Norton (corporate version) for 4 years now and have never had it interfere with any other programs.

Personally I rather dislike Norton's bloatware. I don't like how it literally takes over your computer. And having it run in the background can slow all but the fastest computers to a crawl. I don't think it is worth it to cripple your computer with something that is supposed to protect it.

I rather like Antivir: is very compact, ultra hight detection rate, updated definitions at least once a day.

Maybe it's because I'm running the corporate version, but I only have an Athlon 2600+ and I notice no slowdowns what so ever when Norton is running vs. when I disable it.

If you have a decent amount of memory (i.e. >= 512MB) and you're considering free AV software, then you might also consider Avast Home Edition. It has a higher detection rate, but the only drawback is that it consumes quite a bit more memory than AVG.
