anti virus recommendations

I like Avira. Avast is ok, but I don't like having to register. MSE good for n00b computers you maintain for others. Not much control, but it works well, and doesn't do anything that can confuse people.
 
I've been using Avira for a while now (3 years or so) and haven't had a single issue with it, and no viruses or anything.

I ran Avira free for several years without any issues.
I got the bug to switch and jumped on the Vipre black friday discount offer.
Shortly after installing Vipre... BANG, I snagged a fake AV that I had to clean out.
My surfing habits stayed the same (after the Vipre install)... I watch what I'm doing.
I had high hopes for Vipre, but feel let down after this infection.

I ended up uninstalling it and going back to Avira.
Now I've got about a year and a half left on a Vipre site license that I'm not using. 🙁

I may give it another shot before the license runs out, just for kicks.
 
I will suggest Avast Free (or if you want, they also have a pay version with more features)
And do not worry about the registering. They will not send you emails and it seems they also do not sell email addresses. No issues so far with them. It runs fine, easy to configure and does not use a lot of system resources. I use the free version.
 
Another vote for Avast Free. It has a silent mode which prevents it from interrupting with alerts and messages unless they are urgent. Very nice.
 
mse has the largest userbase on the planet. so it wins for personal use. i dont like the forefront management myself.
 
Malwarebytes has been my go to for awhile. I haven't used Avast in years.... seemed to have grown in popularity. I don't like using anti-virus that you can't exit out of. Doesn't AVG make it impossible to close the application?
 
Another vote for Avast free - definitely, without a doubt, it is the best current free AV product bar none. I have it combined with the paid version of Malwarebytes and they make a very effective combination. My distant second choice for a free product in a pinch would probably be Avira.

If I were paying for AV, NOD32 is a very solid choice. That being said, though, I'd also have to seriously consider trying the paid version of Avast. They have put so much effort into improving the free version over the last few years that I would find it hard not to reward that effort by making a paid purchase.

MSE is light on resources, easy to use, and pretty effective against viruses. However, it also has a very significant downside: it is pathetically weak at preventing malware infections from drive-by downloads. I won't use it any more myself or recommend it to others until MS takes steps to address this issue. Combining MSE with the paid version of either Malwarebytes or SuperAntiSpyware would probably be a good interim step.

Really dumb question:

Do these AV programs act as firewalls or is that typically the paid for version (or neither)? Should I just be running windows firewall?

[e] Do I want to put the anti-virus program on my SSD or leave it on my HDD?

windows firewall is quite fine. why would you need more? Unless you are doing host based IPS (which is alot to ask for some pc's) then you should be fine with the windows firewall.
