Anti-Virus 101

Windogg

Lifer
Just had the following conversation.

User: Windogg, my system at home got a virus last night.
Me: Ugh.. that sucks. Did you disinfect the file?
User: Well, here's the thing. I wasn't sure if it would clean it totally so just to be safe I deleted the entire directory.
Me: Uhhh... that's kinda harsh. Didn't have to do that.
User: Well I did what you do and went into DOS with a boot disk because I didn't know if Windows was already affected. Says something about "Sharing Violation" when I was deleting stuff. Now the system won't even boot up.
Me: Won't boot up? What did you delete?
User: Everything in "Cee" Colon Backslash Windows
Me: ............................................................. Hang on, I think I hear a server crashing somewhere.

speaking of anti-virus, have you seen McAfee ASAP? I relaly like it. Just installed it on all the PCs at work. It gives you an online report of your PCs and the viruses they may have, how it cleaned, what they were, information on the virus, all remotely. Its quite a tool.

Network Admin 101:

When your business relies on a <$100 a month internet connection, a backup connection is not necessary. Throw away any and all dial-up modems you may have, they will slow down your DSL connection if they are stored in the same building.

LOL! Oh man...must be an AOL user. Sadness. 99% of the folks here in my office are just as computer-illiterate. They go into Control Panel and File Mangler and randomly click on stuff...then they call me to say "my computer is broken." I ask "ok, all your icons are gone...what did you do?" Them; "I don't know..I don't remember...why are u asking, can't you fix it?" Ugh. I feel your pain!

Sounds almost like the guy at work. Somehow he keeps getting viruses even though you are not supposed to download anything. The machines are all networked and have Norton on them yet he manages to get past all that.

Guess what? It's ignorant folks like this that give most of you techs your job security. Celebrate them as the cash cow that they are 🙂

lol, agreed. I get lots of stupid questions at work, it's kind of funny. But I also get a lot of "my home computer .... " Those ones I hate. I got a call last week from a lady who was in Florida and couldn't get her new laptop to dial-up into MSN. Yesterday, I got a call from an on-vacation administrator (not sysadmin) who wanted to burn CD's using his old 4x cd-rom. 😕

The IT guys at my brother's company got together and made out a price list for personal computer services. They made the prices more than fair, and now they make money on the side helping out fellow employees with their personal computer problems, rather than becoming everyone's free tech help.

heh, I know what you're talkin 'bout!

People ask me about the problems they have on their home pc's and I'm like "I don't know why you can't even boot into safe mode" How can I diagnose their computer when they give me such a simple description of the problem and I can't even see their computer?

I just installed an anti-virus program and it crashed my system, can't even boot into safety mode. I have to format and reinstall the whole system. This is worse than the worst virus I ever had.
